Announcing a new monthly series on the San Juan Update. We are teaming up with the San Juan Historical Museum to bring you a short article with a new subject each month…
Here’s the first in a monthly series of archival photographs from the San Juan Historical Museum. Each image will feature a subject chosen with that month or season in mind. A variety of decades will be represented and we hope you’ll recognize some family members or those of your friends.
September is back to school time! Here’s an elegant 1912 photo of Friday Harbor High School students and teachers. Do you recognize anyone’s grandparents? Were the school pennants for inspiration or where these students were headed? To purchase this image and others, or for help researching your family’s island history, contact the San Juan Historical Museum. www.sjmuseum.org

Thank you for sharing this! Clothing style may change, but class pictures are always fun to see.
History is cool! History is fun! Thanks for posting this, Tim.
Great idea, Tim. I love learning about Friday Harbor and the island. In this photo, it looks like there’s almost as many teachers as there are students. Was the class that small, or are these just the valedictorians? And whats with the jungle of foliage in the background?
This was the first Graduating Class from Friday Harbor High School. One of the women is a Mullis(not sure may be Aida), one is, I think a Perry(Sandwith). I may have more information and will look it up.
Thanks, Cindy. It would be great to know more about this photo and get it described for the future.
