Eleven women embracing unusual sides of life—sometimes eccentric, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant—are showcased in San Juan Community Theatre’s fall play Thursday through Sunday, October 24-27.

Jane Martin’s Talking With…., composed of 11 ten-minute monologues, covers a wide spectrum of life and age, from a snake handler to a disenchanted rodeo cowgirl to a young aspiring actress to a tattooed woman and a baton twirler. Each reveals unique circumstances and an unveiling of emotions to spark conversation long after the curtains close.

The play was last performed at SJCT during the Theatre’s first year of operation in 1989. Two of this year’s cast members, SJCT Artistic Director Susan Williams (who is also directing the play) and Julie Greene had roles in the 1989 version of the play as well. “As part of our 25-year celebration, it feels great to revisit this thought-provoking production,” said Williams. “It shares a very special part of our history with new actresses and new patrons.”

In addition to Williams and Greene, the cast features several veteran actresses that Williams calls “some of the Island’s finest talents”:

  • Patti Bair
  • Therese Finn
  • Penelope Haskew
  • Shannon Kelley
  • Julie Laidlaw
  • Maureen See
  • Fiona Small
  • Kate Small
  • Joy Van Camp

The play—with only four performances (Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday)— will be performed on a transformed Whittier stage that has been extended out into the audience to create a more intimate and up close setting, limiting the number of audience members each night to a maximum of 120 (the Whittier regularly seats up to 285 people).

The Business Partners for the production are Robin’s Nest and Coho Restaurant. Tickets are $17 for adults, $8 for student reserved and $5 student RUSH at the door. The SJCT box office is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased on-line at www.sjctheatre.org
