Here’s FHHS Athletic Director Rod Turnbull with another Fall Playoff Update…
Many exciting games were played last week in wolverine athletics. All had an impact on post season play for Friday Harbor. With these exciting games, we also learned some great news regarding two of our teams. Both our boys and girls soccer teams were announced as the Academic State Champions for the 2B classification. A great accomplishment. Congratulations to both teams and their coaches for their efforts and commitment to both athletic and academic achievement.
Below is updated information on the playoff opportunities for each sport. While the avenue and the structure of each post season opportunity varies depending upon the sport, each team will be playing for the right to advance on to the state level of the playoffs.
• Boys Tennis – Although few in numbers, our boys tennis team still participated in the 1A/2B/1B District tennis tournament at Amy Yee tennis center on Friday, October 24, 2014. We sent 1 singles player and 1 doubles team. Unfortunately each lost in a first round loser out game.
• Girls Volleyball – Volleyball entered the Bi-District tournament, which began on Saturday, November 1, as the District 1 #3 seed. They traveled to Northwest Christian HS where they were matched up against the home team who was seeded #1 out of the District 4 Pacific league. Down 0-2 in games, the lady Wolverines fought back and defeated Northwest Christian 3-2. The girls lost their second match of the Day in a winner to state game vs Napavine, but get a second opportunity to earn a state berth on Wednesday, November 5, when they travel to host Napavine HS to take on Life Christian. Should they win, they would continue playing for seeding at the state tournament held in Yakima on November 14 & 15. The Bi-District bracket is posted at www.1a2bathetics.com. Use the volleyball tab to access the playoff information.
• Girls Soccer – Our girls did not play last week, but did however still receive some very exciting news. The girls were announced as academic state champions for the 2B girls soccer classification. Way to go girls. On the athletic side, our girls soccer team are the 2014 NW 2B/1B League Champions and will enter the Bi-District tournament as the NW#1 seed. They will host a first round loser out playoff game on Wednesday, November 5, against the District 2 #2 seed. This game will be played at Mount Vernon High School and is scheduled for a 2:00pm start. With a win, the girls would secure an entry into the State tournament, and would play again on Saturday, November 8 to determine seeding into the state tournament.
• Football – Our Football team played hard, but came up short Friday night losing to La Conner17-0. This puts La Conner in the lead for the 2nd and last berth to the state playoffs. La Conner will secure the berth with a win at Orcas on Thursday. Should they lose, Friday Harbor and La Conner would play a tie-break game on Tuesday November 11. Friday Harbor plays one more non-league game on Thursday at 5:00 vs Bellingham.
• Boys Soccer – Pretty exciting week for our boys soccer team. First they were announced as academic state champions for the 2B classification and next they traveled south to Franklin Pierce HS where they met up with Evergreen Lutheran, the District 2 #2 seed. The Wolverines played a great team game and won 2-0 securing a berth into the boys 1B/2B state tournament. The boys will now continue playing for seeding position for the state tournament. They will first play Mount Vernon Christian on Wednesday, November 5, at Mount Vernon HS. The game will start at 12:00. Win or lose the team will play again on November 8 in district play, and then on November 13-15 in the first round of the state playoffs. Again, it was also announced that our boys team earned the academic state championship for 1B/2B boys soccer. Great job boys…
