IMA kicks off new Artists Workshop Program with photographer John Miller
San Juan Islands Museum of Art (IMA) opens its 2015 Artists Workshop Program with “Managing Your Digital Camera – How to Consistently Produce Print-worthy Photos” by local professional photographer John Miller.
The workshop, which runs Saturdays February 21 through March 14 from 3 to 5 p.m., is offered at a special “kick-off” rate of only $260 for the four weeks.
The course outline includes:
- Enhancing familiarity of the camera and settings
- Optimizing settings
- Adjusting depth of field
- The basics of perspective and composure
Students will also have the opportunity to suggest additional topics.
Participants must have access to an adjustable camera (preferably a digital SLR) that allows manual aperture (f-stop) and shutter speed adjustment with ISO, plus a computer-based image organizer or post processor like Photoshop Elements or Lightroom.
About John Miller
Miller was born in Brooklyn and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. With the gusto of a techie and the heart of an artist, he has continually added to his understanding of the mechanics of current camera and printer technology. He has owned many digital SLRs, including D1x, D2x, D2h, D300, D700, D7000, D800, D7100, plus lenses too numerous to list.
His artistic side is evident in the vibrancy of his well-loved photographs, some of which were selected for the new ferry. Miller attributes much of his success to his command of the work flow (“and it is work,” he says), which occurs between the point at which the image is captured by the camera and the post-processing necessary to render a truly fine art print.
The art of fine printing, producing book covers, illustrations and product labels has kept Miller busy, working in his studio on San Juan Island with three Epson printers that use both paper and canvas sheets and rolls, ranging from 17″ to 44” wide.
Miller, who considers himself a guide more than an instructor, likes to say that “photography is a journey, which I am still on!”
