Stephanie Prima shares this invitation with you for the film to be shown at SJCT next month…
Between 100,000 to 300,000 children each year are victimized in prostitution in America. ANY child can become a victim of domestic minor sex trafficking, regardless of skin color, home life, social and economic status. These children are not imported from other countries; they come primarily from Small Town USA – towns like Friday Harbor and Eastsound. Sex traffickers target small towns because people are more friendly, more trusting, and have little knowledge of how children are lured into the trade.
On Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 7:00 pm, the San Juan Community Theatre will open its doors to students, parents, grandparents and anyone interested in protecting the children of our community. Anti-trafficking advocates will be on hand to create awareness of this often hidden crime happening at alarming rates to U.S. children.
Shared Hope International, an anti-trafficking organization founded by former Washington Congresswoman Linda Smith, will present the first showing of the documentary “Chosen”. This gripping film tells the shocking true story two All-American girls who were tricked into trafficking.
Eighteen-year-old Briana was an honor-roll student, cheerleader and worked at a local café. Thirteen-year-old Lacy was an active member of her youth group, and a volunteer in her community. In the film, Briana and Lacy explain how pimps targeted them in their seemingly secure Southwest Washington small-town neighborhoods, and how they were rescued. The 20-minute film is designed to equip preteens and teens to protect themselves and others from being trapped in the horrific and violent sex industry.
An actual survivor of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST) will share her story, and a panel discussion including law enforcement will follow. Admission to this event is FREE.
If you think this can’t happen in Friday Harbor, think again. As FBI agent Geissinger-Rodarte, Victim Specialist for our region stated, “…if they have kids, internet and hotels, it’s there.” Watch the San Juan Update over the next several weeks for true stories from victims of DMST and mark your calendar. Don’t miss this important educational and moving presentation.

This may well be something we do not want to discuss – but it is something we MUST learn more and talk about. Our children depend upon us for their protection – we owe them our time to learn more about this heinous underground activity
