SJ Singers Winter Concert Prep Coming Up
Posted August 27, 2015 at 5:43 am by Tim Dustrude
San Juan Singers, a San Juan Island based community chorus, begins preparation for the Winter 2015 concert on September 9, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, in the Community Room of Skagit Valley College. This chorus is open to all singers from age 12- ** with the director’s approval. This is not an entry-level chorus; participants should have some choral or musical theater singing experience and be able to follow music and musical direction. Members contribute a fee for participation; scholarships are available to students and partial scholarships are available to encourage families to participate together.
This winter’s concert features a performance of Vivaldi’s “Gloria,” (RV 589). This beautiful, lively and lyrical setting of the prayer, “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” written by Antonio Vivaldi in the early 1700s continues to inspire and delight music lovers of all ages world-wide. To balance and fill out the evening, carols and songs of the season will be presented along with guest performances by local instrumentalists. San Juan Singers programs are well-known for offering a deliberate and delightful mix of classical and popular, traditional and contemporary, and sometimes simply surprising music. This program is sure to make you laugh, cry, and make your heart glad (or perhaps grow two sizes, if you’re feeling a little “Grinch-y”).
Rehearsals are every Wednesday, 7:00 to 9:00 pm, usually at Skagit Valley College. There will also be a special Saturday workshop presented jointly by Angel Michaels and Tim Fitzpatrick (from Western Washington’s music faculty) on October 24, in addition to occasional Saturday section rehearsals. Concert dates are December 12 & 13.
