Friday Harbor Fall Farm Parade, Chili Cook-Off And Seed Program, this Saturday, October 3rd.
Fall has arrived and the Friday Harbor Fall Farm Parade is just around the corner! The fifth annual parade will leave the Fairgrounds at 2:30 PM on October third, turn down Argyle and Spring Streets and head toward the Farmers Market at Brickworks.
Past parades have featured horses, farm trucks, goats and calves on leash, chickens in wagons, tractors, rolling bamboo groves, and plenty of just plain supporters of local food and farms.
This year’s parade theme is “Let my People Grow!” According to Roger Ellison, parade organizer, “Farmers and gardeners are fired up. I expect to see some rolling greenhouses, scarecrows, and pitchforks in the parade this year.”
Follow the parade to Brickworks for the Chili Cook-Off, which starts at 4:00 PM and features live music, fresh-pressed cider and of course some really good chili. For dessert, members of San Juan Island Grange #966 will be selling pies to raise money for a new deck at the Grange Hall.
Cap your day off with a 7:00 PM showing of the film Seeds of Time, presented by the Tragedy of the Commons Documentary Series, at the San Juan Island Grange Hall. Thor Hanson will be there with his book The Triumph of Seeds, and the Grange will be showing off its 2016 Seed Project and selling more pies.
