There’s a fundraiser happening at Brickworks tomorrow for a new business on the island: “The Hemp Seed”, and these are a few words about it from Ike and Tiffany…

Focused on sustainability, Tiffany Goudey and Ike White aim to serve the community by making healthy hemp-based clothing and goods accessible, right here on the Island. No longer will you have to wait till your next mainland trip to fulfill your daily clothing needs. Soon, you’ll be able to just pop on down to The Hemp Seed and pick up some shirts, skirts, and slacks (socks too)!

With its plethora of uses, higher durability, and lower environmental impact, hemp has become the focus of these two. They are working to grease the wheels of this industry that has been effectively put on hold since 1937, due to Federal regulations. Now that those regulations are being reworked, and hemp is being grown in the US, the goal is to bring production closer to home, and reduce the ecological footprint as much as possible. They will be working with NW companies, and with farmers and manufacturers on the Islands, to “bring it home.”

Having spent 5 years on Orcas, and about 2 on San Juan, Ike has experienced the power of this community to make big changes, and is very excited to see some of that energy devoted to getting this new industrial hemp revolution off the ground. Tiff, a recent transplant from the hemp heartlands of Colorado and Vermont, brings the retail expertise and keen eye for beauty, necessary to make a venture like this work. They are fired up to be working together for the benefit of our Island, and our region.

This store will be just the beginning, hence the name “The Hemp Seed.” With enough love, attention, and diligence this seed will grow into an entity as diverse as the plant itself. Anything can be made from hemp; food, drinks, plastic, fiberboard, tables, chairs, hempcrete, insulation, entire houses, paper, fabrics, cordage, bedding, beds, batteries, planes, trains, automobiles, and any other items that you can think of. The possibilities are there, and these folks intend to bring them to reality.
