Road Construction Updates
Posted June 25, 2016 at 9:25 am by Tim Dustrude
It’s summer time and that means road construction. Here are updates from the Town of Friday Harbor on a couple of projects. First, Tucker Avenue, and then the water main replacement out on San Juan Valley and Wold Roads…
Tucker Avenue Reconstruction Project – Phase 1
What to expect for the week of June 27th through July 1st
The Town of Friday Harbor appreciates everyone’s patience while we work through this project. A project manager is on-site at all times to address concerns. Do not hesitate to contact Town Hall at (360) 378-2810 with questions or comments.
Project task(s):
The Contractor finished constructing the water main alignment up to the Guard Street intersection.
One crew will begin construction of fire hydrant and water service connection lines. Lots currently connected to the water system will be switched over to new lines once they are tested, flushed, sanitized and inspected. (Water users will be notified in advance of service interruptions.)
The Contractor will be transitioning into the phase of the project for installation of power and telephone infrastructure. A second crew will begin pouring concrete bases for new street lighting, followed by trenching for electrical, fiber optics and cable TV.
Project areas will cleaned and patched prior to the holiday weekend.
Street Closure:
Construction of water service lines and trenching both require multiple road crossings. This will cause delays for local access and southbound traffic.
The Southbound lane will be temporarily closed during road crossings. Flaggers will advise drivers of when it makes sense to use Harbor Street as an alternative. Southbound traffic may use the Larson Street detour to avoid the construction area entirely.
The northbound lane between Guard Street and Harbor Street will remain closed for the duration of the project.

Waterline Replacement Project
What to expect in the next couple weeks…
Interwest Construction Inc. continues to update your Town’s new water line. This is an update of what construction activities to expect in your immediate area. Construction activities will temporarily increase noise levels, dust and other disturbances. Traffic and parking will be hindered during heavy construction while working in you immediate areas. Interwest Construction Inc. is working with the Town of Friday Harbor and the San Juan County to ensure the construction schedule is as least disruptive to you as possible.
Location(s) of work:
The work area is currently on Wold Road between the Water Treatment Plant and the Intersection of San Juan County Road. The work area will continue along San Juan County Road heading east to approx. Wood Duck Lane.
Work Hours
7 AM – 7 PM Monday through Thursday
What to expect:
During the installation of the new water main and services there will be some impact to local private properties as crews will be installing new water meter boxes and services to some homes, there will be a time when driveway entrances and side roads will be affected for short durations during the installation. These specific home owners will be notified separately as work comes close to their properties.
Closures and Detours:
There are no plans to close the road during this work. Businesses are open as usual during construction. There will be automated lights and flaggers at the work areas to direct traffic during temporary lane restrictions. Bypassing the construction site using the below mentioned roads is recommended, wait times for local and through traffic could be up to 20 minutes.
- Beaverton valley Road
- 2 School House Road
- Douglas Road
- Bailer Hill Road
We will continue to keep residents informed as the project impact continues.

Thank you for these updates. Dogs and cats are coming to Animal Inn and Wellness Center as usual but their people need to allow extra time on San Juan Valley Road or approach us from Beaverton Valley Road/Boyce or from Bailer Hill/Wold to avoid delays. Don’t forget No. 2 Schoolhouse Road can take you from SJ Valley Road to Beaverton Valley Road if needed.Traffic flaggers are very nice and are doing their best to keep us moving. Offer an island story, a joke or a song to these helpful visitors to our island while you sit.
