“Chicago” returns to San Juan Community Theatre this weekend! Thursday, May 11 is “Pay What You Can” at the door. That means no reserved seats–simply show up, give what you can and find a seat before the Whittier fills up. Doors open at 6:30 pm, with showtime at 7:30 pm. THEN, tickets are required for Friday and Saturday’s shows at 7:30 pm and Sunday’s at 2:00 pm. (What a fun treat for mom!). The musical’s final shows are May 18-20. Tickets are available online at www.sjctheatre.org or the SJCT Box Office at 378-3210.
The Broadway hit has been quite a hit in Friday Harbor as well. It’s first three shows filled with very enthusiastic audiences. Longtime islander David Bayley has already seen it two times. “Well, they hit it out of the park,” proclaimed David. “In 25 years of seeing our musicals, this show ranks with the very best. It was a dazzling effort in every respect, incredible singing, acting, dancing, pacing, staging.”

The arts have always represented a beacon of provocative inspiration….. This gift was instantly accessible in the razzle dazzle production of “Chicago” I beheld last night (5/13) at SJCT. From the opening notes & first display of grinding hips, to the final sexy dance duet… from the sometimes electrifying elements of music, dance, costumes, sets, lighting, props… to all the invisible eyes & hands bringing it all miraculously together–even down to the numerous understated bio credits: What a nonstop kaleidoscope of creative excellence!
It seems to me “Chicago” provides us with so much more than quality community theatre entertainment. It models essential elements worth cultivating in our country & our world today perhaps more than ever: To risk being vulnerable & truly seen… to summon the courage to reject stereotypes & celebrate ourselves & others as the multi-faceted, ever-evolving, miraculous beings we actually are… to embrace collaboration for the sake of a story larger & grander than our own egos…
Thank you, “Chicago,” for blessing our island with such commitment, skill & inspiration!
