Ed. note – this post has been updated to correct the date of the showing of Abacus. It will show on July 18th, not on the 11th as previously posted…

Fellow Film Buffs,

Here are descriptions of the next two movies

The Red Turtle, Tuesday, July 4th at 7:30 pm
The Red Turtle Rated PG 80 minutes. Silent with an exceptional soundtrack.

We are trying something completely different for the 4th of July. The Red Turtle is a poignant, wordless tale of a man shipwrecked on a desert island. Small children often experience the world as simultaneously solid and fantastical and you will as well in this film. This gorgeously drawn movie by Japan’s famous Studio Ghibli is much more than a children’s film: it’s a meditation on the very meaning of existence, identity and love. A beautiful film that must be seen. So between dinner and fireworks, bring your friends and guests to the theatre for a special treat. For this night only, free popcorn for kids of all ages.

Abacus, (Correction) Tuesday July 18th at 7:30 pm
Abacus is Not Rated and is 88 minutes long.

Maybe you thought that no one went to prison for their role in the Financial Crisis of 2008-2009. Well you are wrong! “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” tells the incredible saga of the Chinese immigrant Sung family, owners of Abacus Federal Savings of Chinatown, New York. Accused of mortgage fraud by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., Abacus becomes the only U.S. bank to face criminal charges in the wake of the financial crisis. The indictment and subsequent trial forces the Sung family to defend themselves–and their bank’s legacy in the Chinatown community–over the course of a five-year legal battle. Bob Stavers has offered to lead a feedback after this film.

Admission is either by punch card or cash at the door. Punch cards which can be shared are good for 10 admissions are on sale at the Theatre for $55. As a special inducement, folks under 25 can purchase one for $35. Cards can be shared. Single admissions are $8 the night of the show. In addition to the normal snacks, popcorn will be available for $2 with free refills.

  1. Vinny’s Ristorante is offering 10% off your entire food bill when you show your punch card or ticket. This offer is available every Tuesday during the Film Series.
  2. Coho. Make a reservation between 5:00 and 5:45 and get dinner for two for $70 including a bottle of wine! Each person receives soup, salad, choice between two entrees, and homemade ice cream or sorbet. (Other entrees available at slightly higher price.) Remember, orders must be placed prior to 5:45.

See you at the movies.
