Island Senior is a regular column on the San Juan Update written by Peggy Sue McRae…
Whether they are serving up a hot lunch, delivering meals on wheels, or setting up for a pancake breakfast, volunteers are the life’s blood of our senior center. This April in appreciation for all of those who volunteer, the Mullis Center co-hosted with Senior Services an annual Volunteer Appreciation Lunch. “Thank you to ALL the volunteers who help make the Mullis Center such a special place for local seniors to have lunch and socialize” said Senior Services Specialist Debbie Haagensen.
We were treated to a tasty lunch contributed by Charles Thomas, owner of the China Pearl restaurant. All volunteers were given gift bags filled with treats including a free movie pass for the Palace Theatre.
The following three volunteers were especially honored:
- Volunteer of the Decade – Gordon Fowler: for all the hard work he has done over the years to keep our buildings maintained and grounds in good condition and for his contributions on the Operations Committee
- Volunteer of the Year –Carolyn Adler: for her hard-work helping prepare food and drinks for our twice a week nutrition program and for her involvement as Treasurer on the Operations Committee
- Fundraiser of the Year– Albert Claggett: for his coordination of the monthly Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser, including making his delicious cinnamon buns!
If you are interested in volunteering there are a wide variety of volunteering opportunities. In particular there is currently need for volunteer drivers for the Meals on Wheels nutrition program. Whether you are interested in helping out on a regular basis or as a fill-in if you would like to volunteer please contact Debbie Haagensen at 360-370-7526.
