Letter from the School District

Dear Editor,
San Juan Island School Board Director Ralph Hahn announced his resignation from the school board on April 30, 2018. The school board accepted his resignation at the May 16, 2018 special board meeting. San Juan Island School District is currently seeking persons interested in public education to fill this unexpired term as a board member. The next election to fill this position will be the regularly scheduled election of November, 2019. Qualified candidates will be individuals who are dedicated to quality education for all students. Good communication skills and a working knowledge of local school district operations will also be an asset in this position.
To be eligible to serve as a San Juan Island School District Board Member, an applicant must be a registered voter on San Juan Island. In addition, an applicant may not be an employee of the school district or a member of the State Board of Education.
San Juan Island School District serves approximately 770 students and 120 employees. Board members are responsible for setting policy and governance direction for the district.
Anyone interested in this position should submit a letter of application to the school district office by noon on June 6th. The letter should be no more than two pages long and explain the candidate’s interest in serving as a board member. Candidates are also requested to submit a resume or summary of background information along with the letter of interest.
Interviews and selection will be held at a special school board meeting on Friday, June 8th at 5:00 pm at the San Juan Island School District Office located at 285 Blair Avenue. Appointment of the new Board Director is expected to be made that same evening.
Formal administration of the Oath of Office will be conducted at a Special Board Meeting on June 13th.
