Time For Summer Fun And Exploring Salish Sea Life

For families of all ages-join the fun. The San Juan Islands Museum of Art‘s (SJIMA) Summer Family Art Days begin Saturday June 29th, from noon to 4:00 pm, in the orchard adjacent to the museum at 540 Spring Street.

Children and their family members are encouraged to come by to create take-home art projects inspired by SJIMA’s exhibition DEEP DIVE, which celebrates the marine life of the Salish Sea, especially the killer whales.

Experienced art instructors Lana Hickman and Alice Hibberd provide guidance, materials and fun new ideas. All are welcome to enjoy this FREE opportunity for fun and creative expression in the serenity of the orchard (bring a picnic lunch if you wish)!

The schedule of classes is as follows:

• June 29 – Orcas of the Salish Sea: make a painting inspired by DEEP DIVE.
• July 6 – Watercolor and sea salt painting with pop-up sea creatures.
• July 13 – Dream-Catchers: weave a web of sea life and found beach objects.
• July 20 – Create a seaweed collage and combine with your own designs. July 27 – Dolphins, otters and seals: 3-D creations in clay and other media.
• August 3 – Seabird migration routes and nesting sites in mixed media. August 10 – Making prints from marine life (from fish to kelp).
• August 17 – No class this week. Look for FAD art at the SJIMA booth at the San Juan County Fair!
• August 24 – Where sea and sky meet: the cycle of water in mixed media.

Mark these dates on your calendars, as well as September 21^st when the Fall Family Art Days start. Classes will be inspired by the Food For Thought exhibitions at SJIMA, opening September 27.
