DEEP DIVE: The Documentaries

“Deep Dive: the documentaries” will be held on July 13 at the San Juan Island Community Theater at 100 2nd Street North in Friday Harbor, WA from 9:30 AM to 5 PM. (A satellite event of “Deep Dive: the exhibit” at San Juan Islands Museum of Art in Friday Harbor, WA. The exhibit runs from June 14 to September 16).

“Deep Dive: the documentaries” is an event that strives to use multidimensional art to share the beauty and challenges of our Salish Sea, the fragile waters around the San Juan Islands ranging from South British Columbia, Canada all the way down to Olympia, WA. Science will be interspersed with visual, musical, dance and poetic art to create a unique learning experience.

Two brand-new documentaries will be shown! “Artifishal” is a documentary created by Patagonia about fish farms and hatcheries and their impact on native salmon species. “Dammed to Extinction” is describing the issues related to the loss of free-flowing rivers and subsequent depletion of salmon.

Short videos made by the Seattle Times describing current issues with the Southern Resident Killer Whales will be shown. Ballet dancers from the Pacific Northwest Ballet have created a beautiful video called APEX describing the plight of the Orcas through dance. Short trailers will highlight the work of up and coming international videographers who spent time on San Juan Island last summer.

Blake Budwill and Luke Erickson, two San Juan Island high school students will present a trailer of their 50-minute documentary titled “Fading Sound”.

At the end of the day we will wrap up with positive actions we as individuals can choose to make to help our ecosystem become healthy again and save our beloved Southern Resident Killer Whales.

This is a satellite event of the DEEP DIVE exhibition at San Juan Islands Museum of Art, which uses art as a voice to illustrate the beauty and the challenges of the Salish Sea. The exhibit is open from June 14 to September 15, 2019.

“DEEP DIVE: the documentaries” showcases current, thought provoking documentaries about issues unique to the Salish Sea and mingles them with art that speaks for the voiceless. Each showing will be followed by a 15-minute Q&A with the videographers or people in the video.

At the end of the day we wrap up with a call to action to make at least one change in how we use the fragile waters around us to protect what we love.
