Jan. 9, 1964 – Sept. 30, 2020
Roy Leith Roberts was the youngest of four to the late Kip and Kitty Roberts. Roy was a 5th generation islander, born and raised in Friday Harbor.
His siblings are Cherie Roberts Jackson, Peggy Roberts Henscik and Nancy Roberts McAbee. Roy is the father of Tyler, Trent and Isabelle. Roy and his family remained very close up until his passing, meeting for coffee “sesh” every afternoon.
Roy was a graduate of Friday Harbor High School class of 1982. He excelled in basketball and tennis and went on to be lead guitarist in the local rock band Kanaka Joe. Roy was a man of many trades but perhaps best known for his coffee business Roy’s Drive-Thru Espresso, the first drive-through coffee shop on San Juan (it now goes by the name Roy’s Island Buzz Drive-Thru).
He was known for his dry humor and big heart, his nonjudgmental listening, his smile and kind blue eyes behind the wheel of his black Chevy Tahoe as he cruised down Spring Street. He connected with people through music, lyrics and band names. His reading of choice was Rolling Stone magazine.
He truly cherished San Juan Island, his family and the simplicity of island living. Roy was not devoted to any one religion but found spiritual connection in the overlooked miracles of everyday life. He was loved and will be missed by many.
