Island Senior: Please Remember the Mullis Center with Year-End Giving

Posted December 16, 2020 at 4:30 am by

“Island Senior” is a regular column on the San Juan Update written by Peggy Sue McRae.

Any way you look at it, 2020 has been one heck of a year.

Times have been tough for many islanders. For some of us, staying at home without our usual social interactions has been the brunt of it. That has been hard enough.

Others have lost crucial business or become unexpectedly unemployed. We understand that some are not able to donate. If however, you are able to, please consider supporting the Mullis Center with a year-end gift.

Just when the Mullis Center’s popular senior lunch program was expanding from two to three days a week, it had to be shut down due to COVID-19.

Our nutrition program has been adapted to serve an increasing number of homebound seniors and disabled adults. San Juan County Meals on Wheels and More nutrition program has more than tripled its delivery of hot or frozen meals to more than 200 San Juan Island seniors. This vital program is expected to grow even more in 2021.

Volunteer drivers deliver meals three times a week for this donation-based program open to all eligible seniors.

Meanwhile, the center’s usual sources of income, facility rental, the popular monthly pancake breakfast, and other special fundraising events have disappeared with the pandemic.

Other senior programs that are still happening include foot care by appointment; chair yoga class via Zoom; book club via Zoom; wellness happy hour, which is a free zoom class; the lending library; and the loan of mobility equipment.

All of our senior programs rely on your financial support to keep going.

The best way to donate is to mail or drop off a check payable to the Mullis Center, P.O. Box 684, Friday Harbor, WA 98250. If you prefer to drop off a check, please contact us first to make sure someone will be onsite.

If you have questions, please contact Anna Coffelt, center manager, at 360-370-7520 or [email protected].

Your support is appreciated. We will send you a tax receipt thank you letter, so please include your contact information and address.

You can support the San Juan Update by doing business with our loyal advertisers, and by making a one-time contribution or a recurring donation.
