Look…whatever you do this weekend, work it in that you make a visit to see the Community Theatre’s children’s show, Stars Lore: A Mythological Musical. I saw the show Friday night (it plays at 3pm on Saturday & Sunday), and it was great fun. Written and directed by Penelope Haskew, the show drew in the opening  Continue Reading

Penelope and her crew have been working on writing & planning & rehearsing this play since late spring, and when I dropped by dress rehearsal last Sunday the kids and adults were having fun getting it ready for you. Based on four mythological stories from around the world, the show has music in it this year…  Continue Reading

Last Friday, the FHHS football team closed out the fall season with a 27–20 loss at Charles Wright Academy. The weekend before, the volleyball team beat Nooksack (here are videos on YouTube from the match), but was eliminated later in the tourney, ending their season. Good job, Wolverines!

It was a fun Halloween, wasn’t it? I think maybe the only thing better than a day of Halloween is three days…it went on forever! There were people dressing up on Friday the 29th and still dressing up on the 31st… And it all started on Friday with the elementary school’s costume parade down Spring Street  Continue Reading

This past weekend was the end of the regular season for the island’s soccer program…the on-island teams wrapped up the season under sunny skies (those are the teams that stay on the island for all their games each Saturday), while some of the travelling teams (they play about half their games here, and half over  Continue Reading

It was great. This year the Friday Harbor High School Homecoming Parade was earlier than I can remember, with a start time of 3:30pm last Friday, which is a great idea as far as getting the town fired up for the game…‘most everybody’s still at work then, and got a chance to see the parade. Getting it done: The Phonathon makes it happen!

It was cool last night to see how well it worked: Couple of dozen volunteers, including school administrative staff & students and mamas and papas, plus a committed & energetic board, and a bunch of phones. In a little over three hours they called most of the island to ask for a little help, and  Continue Reading

Starting at 4:30 till about 8 tonight, volunteers will be calling island residents to ask for contributions to the San Juan Public Schools Foundation…give what you can. It’s for the kids. I was looking through the Foundation’s website at the highlights of the past year, and it’s pretty impressive — check out the kinds of things  Continue Reading

You’ve seen the little garden across from the middle school/high school…it’s going great! The plot was started this spring by students from the school, led by Albert Strasser (FHHS ’09), who came back from his first year at the University of Colorado to get things started. I ran into some tourists in the crowd (visitors to the island!) who were at Friday night’s game, who said they came to see what it was like to see a game in small town America. If that’s what they wanted, I think we put on a show: a nice touchdown by our guys &  Continue Reading

There are a lot of tough jobs around the island — construction, pouring concrete, handling the tourist rush during the summer, working the job sites. But none is as tough as parenting. And you don’t get a hardhat. Luckily, there are a couple of options for taking parenting classes around the island. First, Jenny Benedict is  Continue Reading
