Island Gardens gets noticed…

It’s always nice to have people notice your good work – and Steve Schramm says a magazine has just covered a couple of places he designed here on the island:

Just in time for summer, two Island Gardens Company landscapes are featured in the current issue of Easy-Care Landscaping, available on newsstands now. One garden is on a busy corner across from the fairgrounds, the other a waterfront property on the west side. The landscaping has guaranteed each a maximum of privacy and a full sense of island nature.

The owners of the in-town property wanted a four-season garden that was always in bloom, yet not very high in maintenance. In response to their desire for a “secret garden” atmosphere, designer Steve Schramm created a fairyland appearance with a mix of evergreens, ornamental crabapples, rhododendrons and spiky blooms poking out from beneath leafy groundcovers, along with the overhanging shrubs. The owner says of their yard, “I feel so at peace here, because this beautiful garden has been at the heart of so many memories. There’s no place we’d rather be.”

Located on a cul de sac, the Sunset Point garden needed an open view that still maintained privacy from neighbors, as well as plantings that broke up the visual mass of the house. Schramm suggested a strategically placed cluster of pines, along with deciduous and evergreen shrubs to provide year-round color – and dynamic visual boundaries. In counterpoint to the drought-tolerant plantings, a dry streambed lined with lush vegetation brings a watery essence to the scene.

The owners of both properties are in full harmony with Schramm’s guiding principle– to create a low-maintenance landscape that looks “as though it had always been here.”
