Jazz Gospel at St. David's

Jazz Gospel at St. David's

Ran into Kathleen Wilson at the grocery store & she said, “It’s gonna be great.” Saw Archie Brooks & he told me, “You won’t believe it.” Checked in with Roberta Leed & she says, “It’s amazing, and it will amaze you.”

Stuff like that gets my attention, so Sunday I called Richard Barker & asked him what the deal was.

He says this Sunday at St. David’s Episcopal Church at 4pm & next Sunday (the 20th), he & some friends are taking traditional gospel tunes & hymns and doing them with jazz chording & influences. He described it as “giving them a facelift.” He’s jazzed up Amazing Grace, and set How Great Thou Art to a bossa nova… you get the idea.

The lead singers in this effort are Kathleen Wilson & Kate Schuman, and they’ll be supported by Mary Barker, Roberta Leed, and Judy Holme. The seven piece band is made up of Tom Starr (trumpet), Carrie Brooks (keyboard), Jonathan Piff (guitar), Denny Holme (drums), Richard Barker (sax & flute), Jim Vedder (bass), Rob Simpson/Robin Lohrey (trading off on keyboard/organ).

The shows benefit the St. David’s Building Fund, with admission by donation (they’re suggesting $10/person or $20 for parents & kids, but no one is turned away.)
