Books to read….

Hey – remember about a month ago or so I asked what books you think every islander should read?

Here are the books that people sent in:

Amy Wynn suggested:

1.  Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea”

2.  Mary Kalbert’s “Reflections on Life in the San Juan Islands” nice little familiar island vignettes.

3.  Steve Martini’s “Critical Mass” (because it takes place on the islands and you’ll recognize stuff and that will make you feel like a superior islander.)

4. “How to Be Happy Damn-It!” Nice little mental health instruction manual.  I don’t like the title but the stuff inside is pretty useful

5.  The Bible, especially Ephesians Chapter 4–all about speaking the truth in love, not scheming against your neighbor, living in unity…all that community building stuff.

From Pamela Williams:

The book I always have loved–and wished I was her—is The Curve of Time by M. Wylie Blanchet.

From Tom Schultz:

Please add “The Light on the Island” by Helene Glidden. They are printing the 50th year edition this year. Marcia and I read this in the late 1980’s while camped on Patos Island (where most of the story takes place).

From Robin Blair:

I think “The Curve of Time” by M. Wylie Blanchet should be at the top of the 5 Books Every Islander Should Read About Island Life list.

Here are my five:

Living High, by June Burn
– Those books with the photos about Friday Harbor (Mike & Julia Vouri), Roche Harbor (Richard Walker), and the new one for San Juan Island (Mike & Julia, this spring) that they prepared with the Historical Museum. Love those.
Snow Falling on Cedars, by David Guterson
Whale Tales I & II by Peter Fromm
Island Bush Pilot, by Roy Franklin

  1. I second (or third) the motion on “The Curve of Time”…
