Thursday’s news call…

Found an abandoned mailbox on Pear Point Road last week as we were walking around the loop...these yellowjackets had set up housekeeping inside. Reckon that's why it's abandoned...photo courtesy of San Juan Update Wildlife Photography, long as we don't get stung.

Sunny day ahead…let’s see what’s up!

A zeppelin, over the island....photo by Erin, I think

Erin Ancich sent over this photo of a blimp over the island from yesterday – with a bit of a question…what’s up?

Here’s the rest of the story, from KPLU.

• When the One More Time Jazz Band plays tonight at the Rumor Mill, they’ll have Jill Urbach along for vocals, as well as rising star Hanna Burke (FHHS ’07)…Hanna’s headed back for her second year to that dramatic arts school in LA next month, so this is a nice chance to catch her – she’s an awesome singer! Show starts at 7pm.

• If you haven’t seen Chamber Music San Juans lately, this weekend is the time to do it – here’s more from our friends at the Community Theatre:

Chamber Music San Juans’ ensemble favorites are joined by internationally-acclaimed tenor Benjamin Butterfield on Saturday, September 11.

Canadian tenor Benjamin Butterfield

Butterfield is considered one of Canada’s most successful and sought-after artists and has performed throughout North America and Europe as well as Israel and New Zealand. The San Francisco Chronicle proclaimed Butterfield a “musically arresting presence.”

Butterfield’s operatic credits include debuts in The Barber of Seville under Carlo Rizzi at Welsh National Opera and The Magic Flute with New York City Opera. In concert he has appeared in Britten’s War Requiem with the London Symphony Orchestra and the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki. Butterfield’s wife, soprano Anne Grimm performed with CMSJ in 2007.

CMSJ Artistic Director Patricia Kostek says Butterfield’s Friday Harbor appearance will feature composter Gerald Finzi’s A Farewell to Arms, in remembrance of September 11. Other works will include Mozart’s sublime Quintet for Clarinet and Strings and works performed by ensemble members violin/viola duo Ron and Roxanna Patterson, cellist Doug Davis and bassoonist Martin Kuuskmann.
