Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. MLK
Posted May 2, 2011 at 2:54 pm by Ian Byington
I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy.
“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.
“Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thank you, Ian, for sharing MLKJ’s quote. It was perfect timing given today’s headlines.
Thank you Ian. I wish the world would pay attention to these wise words.
Thank you! You always find the balanced, reflective response to events.
Thank you, Ian, for your wise and poignent remimder.
Thanks, Ian. I’d been trying to articulate what has been bothering me all day long…
MLK’s spirit lives on in his words, such as these, at times when we need them most, such as these.
Just an FYI: The first Dr. King quote isn’t entirely his. The quote was falsely attributed to MLKJr in it’s entirety because somewhere someone omitted a quotation mark from the original posting:

As soon as I found out I started stalking the internet to find it requoted so I could help give credit where credit is due (just so you don’t think I’m singling you out!). I don’t even KNOW the girl who accidentally got mashed with King, but she sent the image to Penn Jillette after he retweeted the misquote & he was kind (& honest) enough to share.
I have always enjoyed reading the update as a way to keep up with what is going on at home. However, I think we must be careful when we blur the line from blog to news source. I consider the update a wonderful way to find out what is going on in Friday Harbor, which I think is clearly represented by the number of local businesses that spend the money to advertise on this page. I will no longer be reading the update because of this quote.
I try to think of scenarios that make this particular case more personal such as: imagine if terrorists held a Spring Street group of students captive on a trip. Would we sit around and sing kumbaya or would we hope there is a group dedicated to the retrieval of those students? Well done to our Commander in Chief and our military for having the courage and incredible ability to make these decisions and follow through with them.
