Fish for Teeth is funding its tooth-fixing efforts with another batch of fabulous FISH TACOS! The “Taco Team” will be at the Friday Harbor Ace Hardware this Friday from 11-2pm. These huge, tasty tacos are only $7 each, and are filled with wild Alaskan rockfish, Pablito’s salsa, and other premium ingredients.

“People rave about these tacos,” says Matt Marinkovich, local commercial fisherman and Fish for Teeth President. “They’re really, really good!”

Fish for Teeth raises money through these taco sales to support it’s mission to provide free dental care for individuals who cannot otherwise afford it. Money earned goes to fund the Medical Team’s International 40-foot Mobile Dental Van, which comes to San Juan and Lopez Islands to fix peoples teeth.

“We are a 100% volunteer effort,” says Marinkovich. “The local dental professionals volunteer their time, as do the many people who help schedule people to be seen in the van. We work cooperatively with the Health Department, and the Oral Health Coalition to make this all come together. It really is a community effort.”

To date Fish for Teeth’s efforts have brought free dental care to over 200 individuals in San Juan County, for over $100,000 worth of dental services since January 2012. The Dental Van is in Friday Harbor this Friday and Saturday, but those seeking care should apply through the Health Department or the Family Resource Center. The van comes to San Juan Island three times a year in January, May, and October. For more information, or to donate or volunteer, please go to fishforteeth.com.

BLACKCOD TIPS:
Also for sale at the Fish Taco event are Blackcod Tips, which come frozen in 1-pound vacuum packs for $15 each. As Matt Marinkovich explains, “These tasty little nuggets are found at the very tip of a blackcod (sablefish) between his little front fins. They have a firm-but-delicate texture that is hard to match anywhere–they are so juicy when you bite into them the juices seem to pour down your throat… and the nice oily finish remaining in your mouth makes you want to scream for joy at how delicious it is!!! (it has that effect on me, anyway). And, EVERY PENNY of profits goes to support Fish for Teeth and their tooth-fixing endeavors!”

Blackcod Tip COOKING SUGGESTION:
Matt says: “My favorite way of preparing these little jewels is to marinade them in miso, soy sauce, chopped garlic, chopped fresh ginger, pepper, and a bit of brown sugar. An overnight marinade is best but just a few hours soak works fine, too. I get the BBQ grill really hot and throw them on for a few minutes on each side until they are a bit charred. This makes for a more well-done blackcod tip, but as far as I can tell, you cannot overcook these things–they are ALWAYS DELICIOUS!”
