Here’s a cool new place that popped up over on Tucker, just in time for the holidays. Rick and Virginia’s friend Linda did a write up of their shop  so I’ll let her take it from here….

After 3 decades of working wood and collecting wood, longtime local hand-craftsman and Pacific Northwesterner Rick Waldron has developed a well honed eye for design and a master’s skill for woodworking. He is happy to share his skill with island born & raised Virginia Nash. Both  recognize the value of pattern and wood quality. Their individual work stands out as distinctive and exceptional.

They have combined two perspectives in a pop-up Christmas shop, the Board Room. Located below the top of Tucker Avenue (near the tennis courts) in Friday Harbor.

Hours are from 12-6 Tuesday thru Saturday and until 7 on Friday.

Traveling the Pacific Northwest from Montana, Oregon and Northern California to Washington in search of wood, Rick has returned with Maple, Myrtle, Juniper and Walnut in addition to many other varieties. Rick has built a following in the islands and Seattle creating wood floors, commercial bars, and intricate inlays.

Rick’s cutting boards, in designs that sit flat or with attached legs, are small to large works of art. Continual experimentation with bold color and pattern combinations, and decades of collecting and working with wood have come together in woodwork that is both functional and beautiful.

He combines native Northwest woods with other beautifully colored hardwoods in many patterns and combinations, including end grain and multicolored butcher block – they all look remarkable in any kitchen, or as stand-alone pieces of art, and are stunningly beautiful.

At the shop Rick’s work includes

  • compact cheese and sushi boards
  • mid size multi-patterned and colored or solid kitchen standards
  • butcher block multi-colored or solid prep work sizes
  • spalted wood coasters
  • handsome side tables
  • highly patterned natural-edge dining tables, of Northwest and other lumber
  • classic seating pieces
  • wood hinges
  • raw slabs

Virginia brings a sophisticated pattern sense, finding new uses for wood in functional yet beautiful items:

  • inexpensive handmade natural shape wood buttons
  • simple artist-designed modern art wood holiday ornaments
  • worked wood coat hooks, wall mount hand crafted coat and hat racks
  • burled and spalted jewelry dresser sets
  • rough edged bottle stops
  • simple, finished Pacific Northwest native wood slab cutting boards with natural bark edges

Every piece is made with skill and pride.

Remarkable, affordable woodwork, created by local craftsmen, available at The Board Room, a fantastic one stop Christmas & Holiday gift destination!

Take a look at some of their items online at this link and then go check them out over on Tucker Avenue, just down the hill from Guard St.  They have lots of parking.
Hours Tues – Sat: 12 – 6 pm, and until 7pm Friday.
Hours will increase towards Christmas.

Rick says “I know many people are pressed for time around the holidays. Give me a call at 378-2693 if you’re unable to stop by during regular hours. I can find a time to meet you at the store at an hour that works for you”.
