Mozart’s Dark Comedy in The Met: Live in HD Series
Mozart’s beloved opera about testing the ties of love, Cosí Fan Tutte, is presented in HD at San Juan Community Theatre on Sunday, May 25 at 2:00 p.m.

Music Director James Levine makes his long-awaited return to the Met podium to conduct the opera that was the third and final collaboration between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. The opera is considered a fascinating paradox: a frothy comedy of manners with an intensely dark take on human nature; an old story (it has antecedents in Boccaccio, Shakespeare, and Cervantes, among others) with a startlingly modern tone; and a beautiful score depicting questionable behavior.

The cast is filled with youthful Met stars: Susanna Phillips and Isabel Leonard are the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella, Matthew Polenzani and Rodion Pogossov are their lovers, with Danielle de Niese as the scheming Despina.

In addition to The Met: Live in HD presentations, San Juan Community Theatre also rebroadcasts National Theatre Live productions from Great Britain. A schedule of the HD-live events is available at www.sjctheatre.org. SJCT’s new partnership with both programs and the HD equipment to present them, was made possible through a generous bequest from the late Dodie Gann.
Tickets for Cosí Fan Tutte are $20 for adults, $18 for SJCT members and $10 for student reserved. Tickets are available on-line at www.sjctheatre.org or at the SJCT Box Office: 378-3210.

Awarding-Winning London Play in HD May 26
London’s Evening Standard calls it “a beautiful, eloquent, dazzlingly inventive show about the wonders of life;” and on Monday, May 26 at 7 p.m., San Juan Community Theatre presents that award-winning play as part of it National Theatre Live in HD programming.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Haddon, adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is the winner of seven Olivier Awards in 2013, including Best New Play.

The play centers on Christopher, 15 years old, who has an extraordinary brain – exceptional at math while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion of killing Mrs Shears’ dog Wellington, he records each fact about the event in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of the murder. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for SJCT members and $10 for student reserved. The SJCT box office (378-3210) is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are also available on-line at www.sjctheatre.org

Irish Dramatist Featured in Readers Theatre Series
A haunting play written by a man considered to be one of the greatest living English language dramatists is showcased in San Juan Community Theatre’s On Book! Readers Theatre series on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Wonderful Tennessee by Brian Friel centers on three couples on a deserted pier in Ballybeg, Ireland. There to celebrate Terry’s birthday, they are waiting for a boat that will take them to a mystical island, rumored to be the site of sacrificial rituals. The boat fails to arrive and the couples are forced to spend a night on an abandoned pier, singing (both inspirational songs and show tunes), recounting local history, expounding on religious myth, and reminiscing on their lives, friendships, secrets, and mishaps.

The reading is directed by Fiona Small, who is the narrator, as well as cast members Dorian Oliver, Susan Williams, Doug Schirmer, Shannon Kelley, Joy Van Camp and Alan Geddes.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with festival seating in the Gubelman Theatre. Admission is free. For more information on the series and other Theatre events, visit www.sjctheatre.org
