Take three pianists, a flutist, clarinetist, cellist, bassoonist and violinist. Mix with classical pieces from two island composers as well as a variety of pre-21st century composers and it’s a recipe for a light and beautiful evening of great music on San Juan Island.

Clarinetist Sue Collado has again assembled a diverse group of island and mainland musicians for this fourth edition of Melodious Notes Over the Harbor at San Juan Community Theatre on Saturday, March 7th at 7:30 pm.

This year’s island musicians are pianists Dorothy Baker and Carol Hooper, flutist
Traci Wilson, clarinetist Sue Collado and cellist Sasha von Dassow. Joining them are bassoonist Pat Nelson, violinist Sharyn Peterson and pianist Kay Zavislak.

Collado says the variety of instrumentation gives the group a chance to really “mix it up” with different instruments, players and pieces. “It’s fun to put all of these wonderful talents together and hear how the different instruments blend and balance with each other to give every composition a “tantalizing flavor,” she said.

Works from two San Juan Island composers—Alex Shapiro and Richard Hieronymus—will be highlighted in the program, including Shapiro’s 1998 piece “Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano,” which ends with a raucous sort of gyspy dance. Hieronymus’ “(Wouldn’t Be a Bad Thing) To Be Loved” for flute, clarinet, bassoon and cello was written specifically for Melodious musicians. Collado calls it “captivating and lovely.” The musical lineup also includes compositions from Beethoven, Boccherini, Toch, Faure, Joplin and more. “We are pleased to continue presenting concerts that offer unique bites of great music and are not your typical chamber music program.

The Business Partner for Melodious Notes Over the Harbor is Heritage Bank. Tickets are $18 for adults, $9 for student reserved and $5 student RUSH at the door. The SJCT box office is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
