Eight Islanders to be Honored for Environmental Stewardship

Eight “Good Steward” awards will be presented at the Orcas Solstice Celebration on Saturday, June 20 to islanders and local organizations in recognition of exceptional environmental stewardship. They will be presented at 2 p.m. by the Stewardship Network booths at the Village Green in Eastsound.
Each recipient will receive a special “Finee” award—a glazed ceramic salmon made by Crow Valley Pottery.
Many nominations for the Good Stewards award program were received from members of the community. This years’ award winners are: (click here to see names and photos)
Bishop Craig Anderson of Orcas Island – for including proactive environmental stewardship as a focus for members of his parish.
Scott Meyers and Brigit Waring of Lopez Island – for building a grazing management system that supports a herd of 150 Wagyu “Kobe” beef cattle.
Carter Fuehr-Bush of San Juan Island – for volunteering hundreds of hours with the San Juan Island Conservation Corps.
Pierrette Guimond of Orcas Island – for working to provide the highest quality stewardship at the least amount of cost to the taxpayer.
Tom Reynolds and Mariluz Villa of Brown Island – for restoring their property through removal of shoreline armoring.
Tim Clark of Lopez Island – for actively recycling and upcycling, and creating homes that rely heavily on renewable sources of energy, water conservation and permaculture.
Chuck Schietinger of San Juan Island – for inspiring his students at Spring Street International School to speak up for their beliefs.
Misty Todd of San Juan Island – for maintaining a strong eco-ethos at her Silver LEED Certified Island Inn at 123 West.
These awards are sponsored by the Stewardship Network of the San Juans. Since 2008 the Network has honored individuals, families, teachers, students and businesses that have demonstrated conservation ethics benefiting our entire island community.
Nominations were accepted in the following eight categories: Shoreline Stewardship, Farmland Stewardship, Woodland Stewardship, Village Stewardship, Business Stewardship, Individual Stewardship, Youth Stewardship and Educator Stewardship.
