The Chamber of Commerce shares their Chamber Member of the Month…

ChamberLogoThe Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor has been serving San Juan Island for over 30 years. Since 1982 APS-FH has provided homeless dogs and cats safe haven, medical care, nutritious food and loads of love and affection.

The organization also promotes humane education and a low-cost spay/neuter assistance program. The shelter receives no state or county funding except for a portion of the county dog tags and its continued operation depends entirely on the generosity of its supporters.

APS-FH embarked on the New Home – New Hope capital campaign in 2014 to raise the funds necessary to build a much needed new animal shelter. The many years of wear and tear and island growth have rendered the current animal shelter inadequate to safely accommodate the ever increasing number of animals in need of assistance.

And with the possibility of the Port of Friday Harbor and the FAA choosing not to renew another long-term lease with APS after 2017 in lieu of future port property development, the organizations felt strongly it was time to find a new location for the shelter. With the help of a generous couple here on San Juan Island, APS has been able to purchase a 5-acre piece of land at 994 Cattle Point Road.

And with the help of many other generous donors in the community, the organization is on its way to accomplishing making this dream a reality. APS-FH is happy to announce it has reached the 50% mark in the fundraising goal, but still has a ways to go. With the help of our community we can get this done.

If you are interested in helping APS reach its goal, or any questions about the project, please contact Leslie Byron, APS Director, at 378-2159.
