Frequent Update contributor Aaron Shepard has launched a photo blog, An islander’s Eye, to offer his photographic views of Friday Harbor and the San Juan Islands — including many of the shots you first see here.

Fittingly, the blog’s premier article is “Welcome to Friday Harbor,” a photo essay overview of the town and the island. If you ever need to send someone to one Web page that sums up our community, this could be it!

  1. For Aaron — No need to apologize for any of the arts here….. I just came back from NYC where they were holding their big Christmas Craft Fair in Union Square. A friend, who has lived there his whole life was extolling its virtues and telling me how people look forward to it every year. Well! I can tell you I have never been so disappointed in my life! Every booth was some kind of mass produced, made in China “craft” if you could even call it that! And food like the non-local fare that we see at the County Fair! I was kind of dumbfounded at what was going on, and proceeded on my way to the deservedly famous farm market at the other end of the Square. Whew! We are so lucky to live where an “Art” Fair understands the meaning of the word! I’m still chuckling…..

  2. as many pictures as have been taken of SJI, Aaron has captured the real local flavor in each picture; Sights we see every day I wouldn’t think of photographing, look charming and I feel the nostalgia of “home” when I view his pictures. Very clear, nicely framed, and wonderfully not shots one might think of taking. The writing is an excellent and very non biased honest perspective I think of island life. Great addition!

  3. It is a great blog, very well written and beautiful pictures. It is a great blog for someone interested in moving here or also for locals to see things in a new light. I agree with the previous comment from Pam, Aaron has a great eye for taking pictures of things I would never think of and those are some of my favorite. Great job Aaron and keep it going!
