Library Changes in June

The San Juan Island Library is a family friendly and patron focused organization. We constantly strive to deliver the best services in the most comfortable environment to our patrons, from children to adults alike. The Library values community input and does its best to listen to, and act upon, feedback and patron suggestions. These suggestions have led to a procedural change beginning in June.

This upcoming change, initiated by patron feedback, concerns a long standing issue at the San Juan Island Library: computer access, noise and overcrowding. To address some of these issues and reduce conflict between public computer users, our computer management system will now designate some computer areas for youth and others for adults.

This means that you will need to use a computer designated for your age group. Your library card number is programmed to work on computers designated for your use. If no public computers are currently available in your age group area, you may reserve one at the print/reservation station using your library card number.

So, beginning June 1, 2017, you will need to use your San Juan Island Library card number to reserve and/or log on to library computers.  If you don’t have your library card, and don’t know your library card number, you may request one free replacement card, or request a free staff lookup through September 3, 2017.

Beginning September 5, 2017, if you don’t have or know your library card number you may either purchase a replacement card or request a staff lookup for $1.00.  Payment of the $1.00 fee is required for either option. Guest visitors without San Juan Island Library card numbers may request a free guest barcode.

The San Juan Island Library hopes that this change will meet the evolving needs of our patrons and we thank the community for its support and patience during the initial implementation period. An FAQ sheet about the upcoming change is available at the Library.

Another change we recently tried, in an attempt to make renewing items easier and account information more readily accessible to even more of our patrons, was to introduce Telephony. An automated phone service available 24/7, Telephony enabled patrons to call in to access their information at any time of the day or night and it also made automated phone calls to patrons alerting them of holds and overdue items.

Some patrons voiced concern about the loss of personal contact with staff at the Library and it became obvious that the service was not the best ‘fit’ for our Island community. In response to this helpful feedback we no longer offer this service. You can still access your information and renew and place holds online and by calling the Library during opening hours.

The San Juan Island Library is proud to be a responsive organization and we will continue to listen to our community’s needs and ideas.

We are open Sundays 1-5, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10-6, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-8 and Saturdays 10-5. Please visit our website at www.sjlib.org or contact staff on 378-2798 for more information.
