Skagit Valley College Whidbey Island Campus seeking artists for outdoor mural project

Are you a muralist looking for a new and exciting local mural project? Skagit Valley College Whidbey Island Campus is currently seeking artists to design and paint an outdoor mural project on an exterior wall of Hayes Hall, located at 1900 SE Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor.

The completed mural will be visible from the campus commons area and will focus on history of the College property. The piece will be original and created outdoors and should require only minimal maintenance. It is a community inspired project that will be completed with student assistance when weather is suitable. It will serve as a public showpiece that reflects and celebrates the rich history of SVC and community at large.   

The Request for Qualifications:

Overview
The Skagit Valley College Whidbey Island Campus (SVC) is issuing a Request for Qualifications from artists to design and paint a mural on an exterior wall of Hayes Hall.   

The SVC Whidbey Island Campus is located on the Oak Harbor waterfront and serves approximately 1,000 students. The completed mural will be visible from the campus commons area and will focus on history of the college property.

Goal
The piece will be original and created outdoors. It should require only minimal maintenance. It is a community inspired project that will be completed with student assistance when weather is suitable. It will be a public showpiece that reflects and celebrates the rich history of the college and community at large.

Location
The buildings southern exterior wall is two stories.  The mural will be on the ground floor wall. The area designated for the mural is 136 foot.  This area has 2 doors that will be included in the painted area.  The ground in front of the wall is covered with poured concrete. Artists will be asked to design an image that covers the entire identified space.                                                                  

Budget
The project budget of $4,500 is for all expenses associated with the mural. This includes, but is not limited to, the artist’s compensation for design and completion of project, materials, and travel.

Project Timeline
RFQ response deadline:  May 15, 2018
Selection and Notification of finalists:  May 25, 2018
Deadline for submission of proposed design:  June 1, 2018
In person, Skype or Zoom presentation of design:  June 8, 2018
Final design review by SVC Heritage Mural Art Advisory Committee, SVC WIC Art Committee, and the SVC Whidbey Administration: Week of June 11-15
Notification of selected artist and execution of project agreement:  June 15, 2018
Project completion: July 1 – September 15, 2018

Eligibility
Applicants should provide evidence of experience and qualifications for designing and completing the work of art they propose.  They must be willing to work collaboratively with the SVC Heritage Mural Art Advisory Committee and student assistants. An application from a group of artists must include the qualifications of all the group’s members.

How to Apply
Interested artists email a single PDF that includes the following to [email protected]

  • Contact information (name, mailing address, phone number(s), and email address)
  • Resume (2 page max.)
  • A single paragraph biography
  • 1 page max – Why you are interested in the project
  • Artist’s statement
  • List of 3 references
  • 6 to 8 images of your artwork. Include the title, medium, date, size, and description

of each piece.  All mediums are welcome, but examples demonstrating abilities with large scale public works should be included.

Use last name when saving the PDF (e.g., lastname_RFQ.pdf)

Submissions must be received by May 15, 2018.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
