Today we have this letter from Gordon Fowler in the San Juan Update mailbag…

Mullis Center Denounces Pledge of Allegiance to American Flag.

The Mullis Center Operations Committee has decided to discontinue the practice of honoring the American Flag at the majority of Senior Lunches, served twice weekly, at the Mullis Center.

Recognition of the American Flag is a common thread across America, especially at a time when our country is so politically divided. The flag is a symbol of our heritage, and an honor to those who have served, and given their lives for the freedoms we enjoy.

Evidently, disrespectful individuals live amongst us, and tear apart at the fabric that has been the strength and unity of our culture.

Also, please note that the American Flag has not been flown on the Mullis Center flagpole for the past several years.

Patriotism is not a bad word!

  2. This is tyranny of the minority! A few unhappy people try to destroy patriotism.

  3. I was sickened and saddened that a tradition I have been practicing since childhood has been assaulted! Shame on our Senior Center for allowing this to take place! Sheila Harley

  4. As it continues to develop, as of Wednesday, 12 June 2019, only two, male combat Veterans have been banned from the Mullis Community Senior Center, and both are dues-paying members of the Center. Why? Thougn Center officials are close-mouthed and cagey about specifics, the reason is apparently that we were “disruptive” for reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, being the target of vulgar language by an Executive Board member, being physically attacked by an employee of the Center, being the target of an attempted strongarm robbery by an employee of the Center, and being the recipient of a rude, angry, and threatening gesture by a member of the Executive Board.

When being the recipient of criminal activity and continuing to say the Pledge of Allegiance is sufficient cause for expulsion from participating in an organization, Americans have truly taken residence in the Twilight Zone!
