Island Rec is pleased to welcome Carlos Garcia as their new Recreation Specialist for Programs, Jen Henry as their new Recreation Specialist for Community Events, and Brian Krembs as their new After School Program Manager (STAR)

Carlos will primarily be organizing youth, teen, and family programs. Carlos spent the last 5 years as high school math teacher and wrestling coach in Clovis, California. Carlos graduated from California State University, Chico, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a master’s degree in Education.

He is excited to have an opportunity to work with the people of San Juan Island to promote exercise and recreation. Carlos has always had an interest in living the pacific northwest, admiring the beauty found at every turn and is excited to make that dream come true. This summer he got married on the island at Cattle Point, prompting the final step of becoming a full-time resident. He believes that working for Island Rec will be a fantastic adventure and looks forward to providing a growing list of recreational opportunities for the residents of San Juan Island.

Jen will primarily be organizing community and teen events. Jen is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno where she studied English Writing and Studio Art. Jen spent many years working on and running small organic farms in Washington and Oregon focusing on sustainability and regenerative practices. After her son was born, she shifted careers and worked for several years in arts organizations where she worked to bring public programming, STEAM and arts education to the local community. In her free time Jen enjoys creating pottery in her art studio, adventuring with her young son and puppy, gardening and exploring the islands.  She is excited to work for Island Rec and its enthusiastic staff and is looking forward to serving the island community.

Brian will primarily be working with elementary school students but will also be organizing School’s Out Camps and various other programs in the summer.  For the past fifteen years, Brian has worked overseas as a certified Elementary School Counselor in Indonesia and South Korea.  He has a Masters in Counseling from Adams State University in Colorado and a Masters in Education from Seattle University.  His BA is from Gonzaga University and he also spent two years at WWU.  Brian likes school!  A fun fact about Brian is that he proposed to his wife in 2004 in Friday Harbor!  She said yes!  Along with their two boys, they have been part-time Islanders since 2013 and are now elated to finally be full time.

  1. I see the new Program Director woll worj on youth and family programs. Again, no one at Islad Rec is interested in serving seniors, even though we are 1/3 the population. We have a Zoom yoga and and no in person classes. Do we count at all in your world? Will there ever be another exercise class for us?
I wonder if anyone there realizes or understands that you now only serve youth and family….why are we ignored?
