County seeks members for new Climate and Sustainability Advisory Committee

San Juan County is looking for up to four San Juan Island residents to become members of its newly established Climate and Sustainability Advisory Committee.
The committee will advise on policies, projects, and priorities related to the County’s climate action plan. According to the County:
The committee will gather a diversity of perspectives as it looks through the lens of climate impacts, including thoughtful consideration of the socio-economic impacts which cut across age, race, gender, and class. The committee will work from the best available science on climate change, as well as draw on traditional knowledge systems and climate action leadership of local Tribes who have incorporated adaptive capacity into their lifeways since time immemorial. The County will work with Tribes on a government-to-government basis to gather input and facilitate engagement with the formation of the County’s Climate Action Plan.
The committee must include at least two — but no more than three — members from each of the county’s three residency districts. It must also have one youth representative, who can reside in any district. The County states that it hopes to find applicants with expertise in areas such as renewable energy, construction and green building, transportation, agriculture, economic development, ecology, and climate change.
Potential members need to complete the committee application form by Tuesday, Feb. 15. Applicants must be registered to vote in San Juan County, except for prospective youth representatives. They must also provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination, per San Juan County requirements.
Recommended appointments are expected to be brought to the County Council in early March.

Bureaucracy takes time but good people are leading this effort in the Department of Environmental Sustainability. I like the time frame and proposed composition. We have a great reservoir of talent in this County. Many of us who have watched climate change accelerate over the last few decades have hoped for County leadership in necessary adaptation and building resilience in our small communities. I think that our Council is firmly on board with this timely idea but the proof of the pudding will be in the final composition, side boards and support by the County. Hopefully the choice of leadership and tasks taken up will prove to be more focused, functional and impactful than the recent Charter Review Commission. As in the climate advisory elements of that effort there will be predictable pushback. It will be fascinating.
