EDC and 4-H offering trades program for kids

The San Juan County Economic Development Council and WSU San Juan County Extension’s 4-H program have partnered to offer a series of projects designed to teach children about skilled trades.
The first project involves building an electric motor from a kit provided by the EDC. According to the EDC:
Building and experimenting with the kit will help kids learn about the basic principles of electricity and circuits, principles fundamental to many trades. The motor kits are designed for kids ages 10 years and up, and are fun and informative. Less experienced kids would enjoy working with friends or older family members; more experienced kids would enjoy modifying the kit or helping others.
4-H will also hold a problem-solving session on Wednesday, March 16 at 5 p.m. It will give kids a chance to meet participants from other islands, work with each other to solve problems, and take part in a question-and-answer session with an apprentice electrician.
Twenty-five kits are available, while supplies last. On San Juan Island they can be picked up at the EDC office at 849 Spring St. The EDC requests that you call ahead at 360-378-2906 before stopping by.
More information about the program is available on the EDC website.
