Churchill Coffeehouse now serves in the same place where Mi Piace was...

You’re gonna come into Friday Harbor & look around town & say, “Hey, where did everything go?!??!” Here’s your helpful guide:

• The Blue Dolphin’s spot has been re-opened as the new home of Discovery Sea Kayaks, who WAS above the ice cream shop next to the ferry landing. Ivan & Western Prince are still up there; meanwhile, to help pick up the breakfast slack with the Dolphin gone, Stacey & The Hungry Clam now serve breakfast.

• Mi Piace Coffeehouse at the top of the ferry lanes closed in January, and there’s a new coffeeplace in its place – Churchill Coffee.

• While Pelindaba’s Downtown Store is still there, the coffee & food serving part isn’t – the back part was walled off, and has re-opened as the Naked Bean coffeehouse (owned by Billy & Cassie) earlier this month.

• At Friday Harbor House, they’ve opened their new restaurant. Here’s what they tell me: “The Bluff is a comfortable, welcoming destination for locals and visitors alike, showcasing fresh fare from the local waters and farms.  Chef Jason Codding delights guests with a mouthwatering menu of small plates, savory sandwiches, colorful salads and seasonal specialties, many of the ingredients provided by island farmers, artisans and foragers.”

• Remember I told you Madden was moving Steps over to the building across from Downrigger’s? That didn’t come together, so he’s back in the original location, and he re-opened earlier this month.

• Dave Morton bought the Sweet Retreat from his mom, but they’re still in the same sweet spot.

• Marilee the Popcorn Lady has moved to Port Townsend, but she tells me she’ll be back for the Arts Fair on July 18-19 – she says: “I’ll have my usual kettle corn/lemonade booth and will be assisted by 3 of my best past employees so it should be as good as ever and fun too!”

• Longtime Bella Luna server Mari bought the place in April, reworked the menu & music schedule, and now calls it Pazzo Vivo (“crazy life”).

• Both Front Street Cafe & Boardwalk Bookstore closed in January/February, and that spot now houses Charles Thomas’ new place, The Bluewater Bar & Grill.

• The former Fat Cat, lately Latitude 49 (or 48…I can’t remember) is closed – nothing’s in there, this week.

• The Lime Kiln Cafe is expanding to nearly twice its size…should open in its expanded size soon!

And that’s just the food places! Jim Carroll wrote in this morning to add:

• Sally Browne, owner of Friday Harbor Souvenir moved her store from 135 Spring Street (next to SJ Chamber offices) down to Front Street in the Town Square Building, ground level next to The Front Street Ale House and across from Downriggers. Sally & her faithful companion Scooby, now have a water view.

• The Computer Place, located on Argyle, moved about 90 feet North to former Spirit Tree locatation and closer to Radio Shack but next to Isle Be Jammin. More open space, and view of The Big Store, plus will re-open The Menu Bar in the future. Total remodel.

  2. I recently made a list of all of all the restaurants in Friday Harbor that I’ve worked throughout my life starting with my High School job at the Friday Harbor Cafe late 1960s. Its quite a list and NONE still exist.

    Oh our goofy town…
