San Juan Islands Community Network (SJICN) launches online solutions news channel spotlighting island community members and organizations building a more resilient and thriving San Juans
On Monday, September 21, San Juan Islands Community Network (SJICN) launched to the public, publishing its website and initial video news stories created to inform and engage islanders around the community’s most pressing challenges and opportunities.
SJICN is a community storytelling network and digital media channel dedicated to exploring the environmental, economic and social challenges facing the islands—with a focus on opportunities and solutions. By spotlighting individuals and organizations responding to these challenges with innovative, community-centered solutions, SJICN’s mission is to help ensure a healthy, resilient future in the San Juan Islands where all residents, human and non-human, can thrive.
SJICN’s debut stories highlight various organizations throughout the islands committed to sustainability, self-sufficiency and conservation in the San Juans. In the coming weeks, SJICN will also feature responses from all island schools on their plans to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic this academic year.
All stories can be accessed freely on SJICN’s website, sjicn.org , and via SJICN’s social media channels.
SJICN is led by an intergenerational team of islanders united by their shared passion for a thriving future in the San Juans. The community media channel is a project of Navigating Our Future, a San Juan Island-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has been engaged in democracy and sustainability work in the islands since 2003.
SJICN is inspired by the principles of solutions journalism—a community-centered approach to the news that focuses on advocacy, democratic engagement and solution design. As such, SJICN views its work as complementary to that of other community organizations, news outlets and foundations in the islands; SJICN is committed to amplifying the work of individuals, organizations and businesses already engaged in the critical work of community solution design.
Ultimately, SJICN strives to celebrate collaboration, the results of community solution-building efforts, and the quality and wonders of life in the San Juan Islands.
