“Island Senior” is a regular column on the San Juan Update written by Peggy Sue McRae.
Happy New Year!
As the old year comes to a close, whether you are in the habit of making resolutions or not, the Mullis Center offers several ways to gently improve your life.
To bring joy and wellness into your life, Zoom yoga classes with Katerina Wen are now being offered to seniors at no cost.
Join the Mullis Center book club, also via Zoom, to stimulate your brain and broaden your horizons.
Finally, keep your feet happy and healthy by making an appointment for Foot Care at the Mullis Center.
Zoom Yoga with Katerina Wen: Sign up for either or both of two joyful yoga classes taught by Katerina Wen.
Chair Yoga, Tuesdays at 1-1:45 p.m., is a popular, easy-to-follow sequence improving your mobility and vitality including breathing practices to relieve stress and create calm. Says Katerina, “It is a sweet gathering where we share a lighthearted practice to re-pattern our body’s ability to become resilient again!”
This class will be free for the first three months of 2021 to all Mullis Center members.
Wellness Happy Hour on Thursdays at 1 pm is similar to Chair Yoga but with supported standing poses to help with balance and stamina. These exercises will brighten your mood, sharpen your mind, and improve your life. “The goal of the practice is to uplift people’s spirit by reawakening their ability to move comfortably, breathe deeply, and embrace more joy.” This class is FREE to all Mullis Center members.
Mullis Center membership ($25 per individual $40 per couple) waivers are available for anyone facing financial hardship and as always, donations are happily accepted.
Contact Anna Coffelt at the Mullis Center for more information or to register for classes at 360-370-7520.
Thanks to Katerina for the mandala image used here to welcome in a new year, she says her mandalas emerge from meditations and, “are my non-verbal way of translating the magic in the air!” Link to: Katerina’s webpage.
Mullis Center Book Club: Reading is not only good for your brain, in these days of pandemic isolation, reading also offers an open doorway to other places, people, and perspectives. Enjoy sharing your reading experience with a convivial group of readers facilitated by San Juan Island Library’s Beth Helstien.
Book Club meets via zoom on the second Monday of each month at 1:15 p.m. Books are selected by club vote and have usually been around long enough to be available second hand and are also usually available in large print or in audio.
The next four books include Haunting Paris by Mamta Chaudhry for Jan. 11, “Brooklyn” by Colm Toibin for Feb. 8, “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate for March 8, and “The Water Dancer” by Ta-Nehisi Coates for April 12.
Email Beth Helstien at [email protected] to receive the Zoom meeting invitation.
Foot Care at the Mullis Center: Finally, step into the New Year with nicely trimmed toenails and smooth feet. Foot care appointments are available on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Safety precautions are taken. Please bring your own towel and wear a mask. A first-time visit for a new client is $45. After that, the regular price is $25 for members of the Mullis Center and $35 for non-members.
Call the Mullis Center at 360-378-2677 to make an appointment. They do fill up quickly!
