The guys end the season with a win and two ties to go with eight losses, and the satisfaction of steady improvement through the season. They Continue Reading

Sports Fundraiser…the BBQ this weekend
Written on April 28, 2009 at 3:01 pm, by Ian Byington
I asked FHHS’s Purple & Gold why folks should come to this weekend’s fundraiser (here’s more on the San Juan Calendar), which hopes to raise $45K to keep sports happening until the November 7th vote reinstates the programs…Elisa Howard says it’s going to be a good time: It is our goal to raise $45,000 at Continue Reading
The prom was great….
Written on April 26, 2009 at 9:09 pm, by Ian Byington
Nothing but good… FHHS principal Fred Woods told me late Saturday night that this year’s prom was a delightful, mellow affair with as many as 150 kids coming for a good time. You probably saw the kids out on the town (like Cody Price and Megan Cuomo, who had dinner at Vinny’s) all dressed up Continue Reading

Saturday was a beautiful sunny day to get out & see our kids at work – besides the kids’ baseball & teeball games at the elementary school, four varsity sports were on-island – tennis, soccer, baseball, and softball. The softball girls put together two ten-run shortened games as they blew past the Darrington Loggers 10-0 Continue Reading
Dragons pull off last minute win, 9-8, pick off Lynnwood
Written on April 26, 2009 at 8:45 pm, by Ian Byington
Saturday’s lacrosse game had a fourth quarter worth waiting for, as the San Juan Dragons allowed three goals to lose a one-point lead, only to score three of their own for the one-point win. It was an insprired comeback, the kind that champions pull off. Way to go! (That’s Forrest Dayton at right.) Click here Continue Reading

Written on April 26, 2009 at 8:13 pm, by Ian Byington
Deb Nolan tells me – we gotta eat out! Here’s the deal – when you eat out at the places below, FHHS students get a chance at scholarship money to help get that first year of college off to a good start. The last couple of years, kids have received $1K scholarships, if they do Continue Reading
Kinda like Wrigley Field…
Written on April 26, 2009 at 3:19 am, by Ian Byington
In Chicago, they schedule Cubs games at Wrigley in the middle of the day for two reasons: One, that’s when baseball is supposed to be played, and two, then people can skip work & go watch ’em. Today, you can too – the Friday Harbor Wolverines baseball team plays at 2:45pm here against Orcas at Continue Reading
Wolverines knock off Pioneers 14-4
Written on April 23, 2009 at 10:09 pm, by Ian Byington
Thursday afternoon there was a power outage which darkened the electric scoreboard during the game, but Friday Harbor didn’t have a power outage as they rode a complete game effort by senior pitcher Albert Strasser (in photo) to a 14-4 win over a strong Nooksack Valley team. Albert allowed a couple of runs in Continue Reading

Why our food program is so good….
Written on April 23, 2009 at 6:29 am, by Ian Byington
One of the reasons that Chef Tom French’s Experience Food Project has been so successful is that the food is…good. For people who don’t believe that “school lunch” and “good” should be used in the same sentence, the question pops up: Why skimp on school meals (or feed low-cost, high-crap lunches?) In Yes! magazine, Chef Continue Reading

One of the talented students at Friday Harbor High is senior Lauren Paulsen, who has been shooting Sports Illustrated-level photos at soccer games – click here to see her portfolio (compiled by Cassie Ellis) from the Nooksack Valley game last week, which was arguably the boys’ best played game at home so far this year.
