Colin & his family come to the island on the 26th....

Erin at San Juan Excursions tells me that the Make-A-Foundation has selected them to take Colin (the kid above) out to see the killer whales.

Apparently, he is the 4000th child to receive his wish from the Seattle chapter, and he’ll be on island the 26th of June to take the trip. Congrats to him, and congrats to Erin & Pete for helping make this happen!

Here’s more about the Make-A-Wish folks. -oo-

Taking on the whalers...

Based in Friday Harbor, Paul Watson & his outfit are getting some viewers on TV – here’s more from Traci at Sea Shepherd:

Whale Wars Season 2 Premier Wins Top Ranking in the US

Captain Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd crew featured in Whale Wars had nearly 1.2 million viewers for the Season Two premier on June 5th, 2009 on Animal Planet.  The action packed series, which covers Sea Shepherd’s previous Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign Operation Musashi to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, saw double digit gains from it’s first season average.

Animal Planet ranked #1 among all cable with males aged 25-54 at the 9 PM and 10 PM hours respectively (excluding movies).

“Whale Wars is one of the most exciting series in the network’s history and a terrific launch for our summer season with ten more weeks of amazing storytelling for the show’s fans,” noted Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager of Animal Planet.

Said Captain Paul Watson, “We know that Sea Shepherd’s passion and determination to save the great whales from illegal Japanese harpoons makes for compelling television and we’re glad to see this important environmental issue becoming a part of mainstream media.”

With the whales returning to the area, it’s the perfect time to have this inspiring, engaging and thought-provoking storytelling presentation and then the field-based science break-out sessions for some of the classes. Jeff Hogan of Killer Whale Tales has donated his time and expertise to offer his last program of the school year to FHES, can you think of a better place to talk about whales and conservation?

From bucket brigades to now….

Posted June 10, 2009 at 9:48 am by

On the Fourth, the Friday Harbor Fire Department wants to celebrate! Here’s more from Nancy Tiederman:

Friday Harbor Fire Department Celebrates 100 Years of Service on July 4th

In July of 1909, the Friday Harbor Town Council approved the organization of a Fire Department and began service with the purchase of a hose cart and 600 feet of hose.  Buckets to hold 2-1/2 gallons of water were ordered for a bucket brigade.  Volunteer “boys” responded to a bell and lined up to pass buckets of water from the harbor up to ten brave souls to pour on flames.

On Monday evenings in 2009, volunteer firefighters train with aerial pumper apparatus that puts 1000 gallons of water per minute on a fire.  Today’s fire fighters wear special bunker gear and breathing apparatus and are trained to find the source, do interior attacks and learn when and how to use either water or fire suppressant foam.

During the July 4th Weekend, the town fire department will celebrate their 100 years of service to the community with several events.  On Friday, July 3, a dozen antique fire trucks will arrive (by ferry!) from Canada and the U.S.  Visitors and residents are invited to meet their crews at a spaghetti supper at the fire station.

These trucks will participate in the 4th of July Parade down Spring Street.  After the parade, everyone is invited to lunch at the fire station.  After lunch, come inspect the vehicles at the Antique Fire Apparatus-Car Show and watch fire fighter teams compete in such games as bucket brigades and hose lays.  Saturday evening a delicious Tri-Tip Barbeque Dinner will be served at the town’s Fire Station on West Street.  That evening volunteer crews for both the engines and the fire boat will stand ready to protect the town and the citizens during the usual spectacular fireworks.

On Sunday, the volunteers will host their traditional Pancake Breakfast with firefighters from District 3.  The final event will be Sunday afternoon at the Port with the Ceremony of Recognition of Fallen Firefighters, a cannon salute and official recognition of the Friday Harbor Volunteer Fire Department’s 100th Birthday.

Income from the meals and the sale of Centennial Memorabilia (hats, shirts, mugs, books, photos) will go to the Fire Fighters Association.

The volunteer fire fighters are your neighbors.  They are men and women.  They are boat captains, carpenters, port staff, city and county employees, EMT’s, administrators, dispatchers, and clerks.  Some are self-employed; some are retired.  They meet every Monday evening all year long to train and be prepared to keep our town safe.  Come support their celebration of 100 years of volunteer service with your presence and a thank-you.

Rebecca teaches: "It's like willpower, only easier!"

You can choose to lose, and I can’t think of a better way than working with Rebecca…here’s more about next week’s workshop:

Free Hypnosis Body-image and Weight Release Workshop

Rebecca Barnard, a Friday Harbor hypnotherapist, will speak at the San Juan Island Library on Monday June 15 from 6 to 7 p.m.  Rebecca is the inventor of LimbaSlim, a new weight release system based on the science of olfactory memory, and is the author of LOSE YOUR THIGHS (and your legs will fall off) – a slightly irreverent look at weight loss and female body image in America today.

The approximately 1 hour workshop will include readings from Rebecca’s book and an optional free hypnosis session in which you will learn to love your body and feed it right.  There will be an hour afterward for personal weight loss discussion. Continue Reading

FHHS actor Sam Asher with drama teacher Fred Yockers

You’ll remember that I told you (here’s the story) about how Sam Asher was selected as a nominee for the category “Outstanding Performance by an Actor or Actress in a Non-Singing Role” for his work in Grease here last January, by the 5th Avenue Theater. The awards ceremony was last night, and Sam didn’t win, but it sounds like a great evening was had by all…here’s more from proud mom Diana:

Sam with his brother Russell & friend Brittany Ingram, before the ceremony

Hi, Ian!

Here are some photos from last night.  Sam didn’t win but it was all so very exciting and I’ll never ever forget it!  The energy in that place was UNBELEIVABLE.

I was overwhelmed at the pride I felt when I heard my son’s name announced and saw his name on the Big Screen in the 5th Avenue Theater.

Jeff, Russell, Britney Ingram, Fred Yockers, Jill Urbach, Denise King, Desi Whalen and Joyce King and I were on the edges of our seats the entire time rooting for all those fabulous kids.  So much hooping and hollering from the audience it was deafening.  AND, the entertainment the nominees put on was out of this world.

Truly the best Tony Awards-type Ceremony EVER.

That’s Desi and Joyce in costume in the last photo.  They were announcing Friday Harbor High School’s play GREASE.  Not the best shot but gives you an idea of the stage and the glamour of it all.

Take care,
Diana

Iris Graville (left) accepts the Independent Publisher award from the IPPY presenter.

When I first saw Hands at Work: Portraits and Profiles of People Who Work with Their Hands, I thought it was a winner. As a book, it has incredible production values – great layout, wonderful evocative photography, and a super job of binding. Then you read it – and it grabs you. Well-written stories that stick – it’s great.

And I’m not the only one who thinks so… Independent Publisher just named Lopez Island author Iris Graville & Lopez photographer Summer Moon Scriver’s book as an Outstanding Book of the Year. (You’ll remember Summer Moon’s work was a winner in that Ansel Adams competition here last winter.) Here’s more:

Independent Publisher just announced winners of its 13th annual book awards competition (IPPY) and named Hands at Work—Portraits and Profiles of People Who Work with Their Hands an Outstanding Book of the Year.

Hand at Work

Hand at Work

One of 3,380 books entered in the national contest, Hands at Work was awarded a gold medal in the “Most Life-Changing Book” category.  It also was selected for five awards by Indie 2009 Next Generation Book Awards including the grand prize for Best Cover Design and winner in the Coffee Table Book Category. Both the IPPY and the Indie are national competitions specifically for small, independent presses and self-published books such Hands at Work, published by Heron Moon Press of Lopez Island, WA.

Hands at Work, a 144-page hardcover coffee-table book has been called “deep, meaningful and profound” by Matthew Fox, author of The Reinvention of Work.  It offers profiles and images of people passionate about working with their hands. In vivid interviews, a boat builder, potter, chef, reef net fisherman, quilter, physical therapist, and others explore the mystical rightness of deeply fulfilling work. Most of those interviewed live and work in Puget Sound; many are from Lopez Island, home to the book’s author and publisher, Iris Graville, and photographer, Summer Moon Scriver. “We’re thrilled that Hands at Work was selected for these awards,” says Graville.  “The people presented in it are such models of the rewards that come from doing work with the hands.”

Hands at Work retails for $34 and is available at book stores and gift shops throughout Puget Sound, through Amazon.com, and at www.handsworking.com.
