Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor presented its annual awards at the Notable Women’s Luncheon March 6. The event celebrates the achievements of women in our community. The awards culminate a year of fund-raising by the largest service club on San Juan Island, and a well-vetted application process by its Best for Women committee.

The annual Luncheon is held in conjunction with International Women’s Day (IWD), March 8th. This holiday is celebrated globally and was officially designated by the U.N. in 1975. This year’s theme is The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum. Friday Harbor Mayor Carrie Lacher spoke on the theme, specifically mentioning the help and encouragement she received on her path towards becoming mayor from several women in our community.

“8” Presented in Readers Theatre Series

Posted March 8, 2013 at 10:23 pm by

8A landmark marriage equality play highlights the next edition of San Juan Community Theatre’s free Readers Theatre series: On Book!

Director Julie Laidlaw and a cast of 21 island actors, with license from the American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact, present the play “8” on the Whittier Stage on Monday and Tuesday, March 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m.

Written by Academy Award-Winning screenwriter (Milk and J Edgar) Dustin Lance Black, “8” chronicles the historic federal trial that challenged California’s Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian couples of the right to marry.  Black’s script draws on  trial transcripts and first-hand observations of the courtroom drama as well as interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with festival seating.  A “talk back” with representatives from the island’s legal, social and professional fields about the play’s issues will engage the audience and cast after each performance.

The Orcas Island Edition

Posted March 8, 2013 at 11:20 am by

Just heard from Suzanne Olsen of OPALCO that there are cool things happening over on Orcas Island in preparation for this year’s Youth Rally over in Boise, ID. Here’s Suzanne…

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE: MARCH 22

Orcas High School senior Cameron Schuh, a 2012 OPALCO scholarship recipient, was elected by his peers at the 2012 Co-op Youth Rally to return this year as a Youth Director. This one-week program for high school sophomores and juniors, established in 1986, educates students about rural electrification and grassroots organization, helps them develop leadership skills and also provides some good summer camp fun.

At a planning meeting for the 2013 Rally this month in Boise, Cameron once again rose to the top when he was elected President of the 2103 Youth Directors. For 2013, OPALCO will again be selecting three students to receive the Nourdine Jensen Cooperative Youth Scholarship ($500) and, with Cameron, attend the Co-op Youth Rally and leadership camp at the College of Idaho. Applications are available online at www.opalco.com; the deadline is March 22.

“This is a life-changing experience,” says Schuh after the 2012 Rally. “I have met so many new and interesting people and am making friendships that will last a lifetime.” Lopez High School senior Marné Cook said of her experiences at the Youth Rally, “I had an amazing time. I met so many incredible people. There was always something to do and I learned so much. The speakers were engaging, interesting and exciting. On top of the wonderful seminars, they planned these epic activities: water park, roller skating, bowling and dances. We even had a talent show. They did a perfect job of balancing education and fun.”

The three students from San Juan County (along with OPALCO chaperones) will join with up to 100 peers from rural electric co-ops in Idaho, Alaska, Oregon, Wyoming, and Utah for a packed schedule of leadership-building activities and fun social events. The Rally, scheduled for July 8-13, is hosted by the Idaho Consumer Utilities Association, which also sponsors additional scholarship awards and leadership opportunities to participating students who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities during the Rally.

All sophomores and juniors from OPALCO member households are eligible to apply. The competition guide book and application are available online at www.opalco.com. Scholarship winners will be chosen based on a personal interview and will receive their awards at OPALCO’s 76th annual meeting on the ferry, scheduled for Saturday, May 4. Applications must be received by 4:30 pm on Friday, March 22.
OPALCO is a member-owned cooperative electrical utility serving more than 11,000 members on 20 islands in San Juan County. OPALCO provides electricity that is 95% greenhouse-gas free and is generated predominantly by hydro-electric plants. OPALCO was founded in 1937.

Friday Harbor High School Jazz Band Student Michael Hoeller triumphs at Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

“Outstanding Young Artist” Michael Hoeller

Friday Harbor High School jazz student Michael Hoeller trumpeted his way to an “Outstanding Young Artist” designation at the annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival held at the University of Idaho February 22-24. The Friday Harbor High School Jazz Band directed by Matt Frost competed with 150 other high school bands, about 3,000 students in this festival billed as the “largest educational jazz festival in the world”.

The Jazz Band competed in the High School B division and had an excellent performance. There were 30 Outstanding Young Artist (HS) awards given at the festival. For his featured solo, sophomore trumpeter Michael Hoeller played Duke Ellington’s “Echoes of Harlem,” which was originally composed by Ellington for his star trumpeter, Cootie Williams in 1936. Additionally, the band attended multiple clinics, listened to many other jazz ensemble performances, and attended the Lionel Hampton New York Big Band professional concert Saturday evening.

And in other FHHS news:

Friday Harbor High School Students Dominate 40th Annual High School Regional Art Competition

Friday Harbor High School art teacher Andrew Anderson is thrilled to learn that five of the seven art pieces selected to represent Northwest Educational District 189 in the 40th Annual OSPI High School Art Competition are the work of five Friday Harbor High School art students. The five winners include seniors Will Kromer, Kaylen Meeker, Robyn Roberts, and juniors Ellery Von Dassow, and Alaina Scheffer.

The NWESD region serves 35 school districts in five different counties. Approximately 16 percent of the state’s K-12 public school students are served in this region’s school districts, which range from large to small, urban to rural. For five of the seven art pieces to be selected from the Northwest Region illustrates the quality of the FHHS art program as well as the talent of its art students.

This achievement is spectacular when you factor in the rules which allow the larger schools to submit more students work than the smaller schools. There will be an awards ceremony on March 15th between 5:00pm-6:30pm at the Everett School District Educational Center. The regional winners will go forward to compete in the State competition against the State’s other eight districts regional winners.

Computer for a young Tibetan monk

Posted March 7, 2013 at 7:37 pm by

Thrinley Dimarco is hoping you can help fund a computer for her Tibetan friend Khedup. Here’s her story:

SKC is a Tibetan Buddhist retreat center here on San Juan Island. While we support the displaced Tibetan people and their culture both inside and outside of Tibet, finding a computer for this young monk is not a project of the Center.  It is a personal project of mine for which I am solely responsible.  I am soliciting contributions so Khedup Dor, my Tibetan monk friend, can buy a computer which he needs for his studies.  Since it is risky to send an actual computer to India, I am sending the contributions to Khedup so he can buy a computer there.

What Khedup needs is an Apple MacBook Air, 13″ screen.  When I asked about perhaps a less expensive computer, the director at the school said they have a horrendous problem with viruses there in India and the Mac solves that problem. Continue Reading

LED Upgrades at the Airport

Posted March 7, 2013 at 7:08 pm by

Deanna Eltinge over at the Port sends this airport update:

The Port of Friday Harbor recently received a rebate in the amount of $4,720 from OPALCO’s Commercial Lighting Upgrade Program for the installed LED taxiway signs and lights at the airport.
This lighting replacement was part of the Taxiway ‘A’ Realignment project in the summer of 2012. The lighting project included the replacement of 34 signs and 186 taxiway edge lights with LED fixtures. We estimate the Port will save 30% each year in electrical usage.

Upgrade will save Port money

Upgrade will save Port money

The total Taxiway project costs came to $3.4 million, and the lights and signs totaled about $300,000 of that amount. The Port of Friday Harbor obtained a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to pay for 90% of this project. About $90,700 came from Washington State Department of Transportation, and about $250,000 from the Port.
The Port intends to replace the runway lights with LED technology in 2014. These cost saving efforts reflect the Port Commission’s goal of reducing operating costs at the Airport by using less energy.

This Saturday, March 9th

This Saturday, March 9th

Isle Be Wed, the only wedding show in the San Juan Islands is back and bigger for 2013.
A collection of San Juan Island vendors teamed up to launch the first annual Isle Be Wed wedding show, celebrating island wedding fare available to brides and grooms throughout the San Juan Islands in 2012. Now, the show has grown to encompass all of the San Juan Islands and will also showcase three hosting venues on show day. The show’s coordinator, Felicity Milne, of Cakes by Felicitations, is thrilled with the growth of the event thus far, saying “Because of the overwhelming growth of destination weddings in the San Juan Islands, we literally ran out of room! Showcasing the many talents of our local vendors available for special events on our beautiful islands meant that we needed three venues on two islands!”
