The skatepark…even better!

Posted December 14, 2011 at 8:00 am by

Putting in the quarterpipe last week (it was sprinkling when I shot this).... the big pour was Saturday, and it opened yesterday!

You saw folks working on it last week – the class project of Will Kromer, TK Kromer, and Jacob Jackson was to put in a new quarter pipe (that’s a skate thing)…they got all the permits & permission, the support of Island Rec, donations by local businesses, and the volunteers…and now it’s a reality!

Here’s a bunch of folks who pulled together to make it so: The cooperation of Island Rec, The County Fairgrounds, The Gates Foundation, the Family Resouce Center, and parents; the donations of Lawson Concrete, Gem Welding, Dovetail Builders, Harbor Rentals, B’s Construction, Browne’s Home Center, and the Earthbox Hotel…and community members who dropped off contributions at Island Rec. And…the Community Projects Class at Friday Harbor High – thanks, Jenny!

Just got this nice note from parent volunteer Todd Kromer:

Yesterday we opened up the new 1/4 pipe at the Island Rec Skatepark and soon 27 skaters and bikers appeared and were there until dark….it’s done now and a huge success…come see the finished product!!!

Getting better at being wrong….

Posted December 12, 2011 at 11:30 pm by

I know that the hardest thing for me to admit & say & embrace are the words, “I’m wrong.” Maybe that’s why this TED talk is, ultimately, freeing.

Most of us will do anything to avoid being wrong. But what if we’re wrong about that? “Wrongologist” Kathryn Schulz makes a compelling case for not just admitting but embracing our fallibility.

Christmas ideas…

Posted December 12, 2011 at 9:09 am by

Amy has some ideas...

I love this time of year because it opens my eyes to little gifts that are all around, and it makes me feel grateful…that’s how I felt when I ran into this little Facebook posting by one of my favorite island writers, Amy Wynn:

Here’s some holiday traditions, some from my own days, some from friends of mine…

* My friend Rachel’s family gets out the sleeping bags and camp out under the Christmas tree the first night they put it up.

* Get/make a Christmas bank and put loose change in it. Day after Christmas each person guesses how much money is in it, Count it (good math lesson) and the person who is the closest gets to choose an outing to spend the money on… or donate to a good cause together…

*One year when my boys were young, Santa and Mrs. Claus assembled thirty colorful airplanes and gliders from the Toy Box and hung them from my boys’ ceiling. What a surprise on Christmas morning…another year, glow in the dark stars appeared in the night.

*Kids always got to look in their stockings before the folks were awake…bought the parents some more sleep-in time. Santa wisely put beef jerkey and chocolate in the stockings which the kids would use to wave under our noses to wake us sleepy head parents up.

*Kids getting presents from family far away? copy pictures of the person who is giving them the present and put it on the gift…otherwise Santa’s going to get all the credit (or blame if it’s bunny footie pajamas for a ten year old boy!)

*Find a neighborhood with some good lights, park the car, put the little ones in the red wagon and go for a little stroll.

*Go to the beach on Christmas Eve afternoon. Nice to get some fresh air, burn off a little energy. It was really neat the year we found purple starfish on the beach. Magical!

Happy Holidays! and if anyone has ideas for holiday magic with teenage boys, let me know!!!!

News notes for the weekend…

Posted December 9, 2011 at 1:40 pm by

Bits of that & this, Chris:

• At the presentation about Damanhur on Sunday, Keith and Ann Marie are going to take questions about some pretty esoteric stuff, including the Damanhurans’ experiments with time travel, manufacturing meat, psychic & spiritual studies, and more. Here’s the scoop for the show at 3 on Sunday.

Keith remarks:

I wanted to tell you how excited Ann Marie and I are about the presentation this Sunday at 3:00- 5:00. The free event will be held at the San Juan Room, next to the Bluff Restaurant at Friday Harbor House. The program will  be about the Federation of Damanhur.  We will be showing images of their  underground Temples in Northern Italy that I filmed for my documentary “Dreams of Damanhur.”

My intention is to share with you aspects of their culture that I didn’t discuss in the film, such as time travel research, plant intelligence, new energy sources, new designs for bio-building , esoteric physics, and much more. For her part, Ann Marie will talk about her recent three month stay in their community. We will end the program with a Q&A session and general discussion about this unique and highly successful eco/ spiritual / scientific / art / community.

The Bluff will have a happy hour starting at 5 and then you can enjoy front row seats for the Lighted Boat Parade that’s sure to dazzle the Harbor. The Bluff is planning to have some special dish from the region of Piedmonte in Italy on Sunday night…yum !

• Have you seen downtown Friday Harbor at night lately? Actually, “dark” has no meaning – it’s great all lit up…come see!

• Have you hugged everyone you need to today? Hope so.

Bill

• New cook at Coho Restaurant! Here’s the story, from Anna Maria:

If you take a peek through the kitchen doors, you’ll find a new face behind the range. We are thrilled to introduce our new head chef, Bill Messick.

Joining us from the finest restaurants in Colorado, Bill was anxious to escape the congestion, the smog, and the hustle & bustle of city life. He was looking for a small community with a good feel to it, and lots of outdoor activities; needless to say, San Juan Island fit the bill perfectly. Bill loves the high quality of the produce and foods the island farmers have to offer, so much so that he scouted out the local farms before showing up for his interview. “There’s so much you can do with each and every ingredient. If you cook seasonally, and locally, you’ll never get bored.” Continue Reading

Can you spare a little space?

Posted December 7, 2011 at 10:36 pm by

The library can use a hand if you have a little extra space – Birgit explains:

HELP!  The Friends of the San Juan Island Library needs a new site to sort and store donated books for our annual book sales.

Our former sorting and immediate storage area in the library basement was permanently damaged in last November’s flood and is no longer available to us.  Because we have had to limit book donations, we are unable to hold our holiday book sale this year, and next year’s big summer sale is possibly in peril.

We need a centrally located, dry heated location where we can sort and pack books.

Unfortunately the rent for such commercially available spaces would consume the income from our sales.  If anyone is willing to donate such a space for a tax deduction for the rental value, please contact  Birgit Kriete at 378-3972 or Jan Smulovitz  at 378-8983.  The Friends of the Library is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Winter’s coming…news from Shakespeare

Posted December 7, 2011 at 10:27 pm by

Here comes the winter solstice....

You know how the music & words shape what we feel & say & do each day – it’s so cool when the poetry of our songs & verse says so clearly what is in our hearts & minds, whether it’s a cry of joy or singin’ the blues – that’s why it’s good to swap songs with each other. So, here’s one, as the winter solstice bears down on us…

How like a winter hath my absence been (Sonnet 97)
by William Shakespeare

How like a winter hath my absence been
From thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year!
What freezings have I felt, what dark days seen!
What old December’s bareness every where!
And yet this time remov’d was summer’s time;
The teeming autumn, big with rich increase,
Bearing the wanton burden of the prime,
Like widow’d wombs after their lords’ decease:
Yet this abundant issue seem’d to me
But hope of orphans and unfather’d fruit;
For summer and his pleasures wait on thee,
And, thou away, the very birds are mute:
Or, if they sing, ’tis with so dull a cheer,
That leaves look pale, dreading the winter’s near.

These are my ‘going out’ pajamas.

Keith's photography & Ann Marie's stories...amazing. Photo of the earth temple in Damanhur, by Keith Busha

I’d have to say – I’m pretty excited about this.

On Sunday, Filmmaker Keith Busha will be joined by Ann Marie Molnar (she works at Lavendera in town) who returned this year from spending three months living in Damanhur. Keith’s website can tell you more – much more – about Damanhur, and here’s the website for the place itself.

In 2005, filmmaker Keith Busha found himself drawn to Italy to view and film the art of a unique, largely unknown community.  He found their extensive and extraordinary art to be only a very small piece of a story that consumed him for years.  After many trips and much research, this self-proclaimed, road weary skeptic opened his eyes and mind to the wonders of this enlightened and innovative community.

This film, originally about art, became a multilayered journey into the heart of a new and growing civilization that must be seen to be believed.  A society where nothing is impossible and where there are no limits to what can be done. That is the society to which Ann Marie moved earlier this year, and now returns to tell her first-hand experience.

See you at the presentation!

Where are you eating tonight?
