History in concrete – Boyd explains on Wednesday….

Posted May 9, 2010 at 11:50 pm by

There’s a presentation at the Historical Museum about the role of building blocks in Friday Harbor’s history on Wednesday – here’s the story behind THAT story:

Casting the First Stone: The History of Concrete Block Buildings in Friday Harbor
with Boyd C. Pratt, architectural historian

Wednesday, May 12th 7pm

San Juan Historical Museum, 405 Price Street, Friday Harbor

Suggested donation $5; museum members free.

Come learn about the exciting and intriguing history behind this dull-as-mud historic building material!  Concrete block, sometimes called “cast stone” because it was deliberately molded to resemble rock-faced construction, was a popular ‘cheap, quick , and easy’ building material typical of the early 20th century.  The Friday Harbor Brick and Tile Company manufactured the blocks and bricks used to build significant local buildings, including the Schuman Building (1916, currently Kings Video and Vinnies); Roark’s Dry Goods (1920s, currently part of Kings Market); Town Hall (1934); and the columns flanking the path on the south side of the San Juan County Courthouse.

Chock-a-block entertainment–guaranteed to make you laugh, cry, and then go out and hug a concrete block building!” John Q. Mason, The Bricklayers Gazetteer.

Art Hansen, Red Barn, 2006, watercolor, 21 x 29

Art Hansen – Celebrating 80
Solo Show,
Recent watercolors and 25 years of etchings and selected lithographs
May 15 – June 6, 2010

Waterworks Gallery’s first show of the year features Art Hansen. Art’s stylistically simplified watercolor landscapes are well know in the Northwest. Art is a third generation islander, and while the landscapes may change, Hansen’s constant love affair with elements of nature and his innate ability to create his visual imagery endures. Art Hansen known for his watercolors, he honors everyday things in our lives—an exquisite red poppy, asparagus spears rising from the soil, one of his beloved barns or that awe-inspiring sunset over the Olympics become visual poems under his well-practiced brush. The gallery has represented the Art Hansen for the 15 years,

Starting our 25th year. Waterworks Gallery is San Juan Island’s premier gallery reflecting the experience of the Pacific Northwest in the artwork of the gallery painters, sculptors and printmakers.

What the Soroptimist Club did on Earth Day….

Giving the Garry Oaks a chance on Earth Day....

Giving the Garry Oaks a chance on Earth Day....

Barbara Sharp from the Soroptimists sent over this cool report:

CUTTING TREES TO SAVE OUR ISLAND’S GARRY OAKS

Who would have thought you could spend Earth Day cutting down trees?  Supervised by Doug McCutchen of the San Juan County Land Bank, Soroptimists did just that.  On Saturday, April 17th, volunteers helped restore a significant Garry Oak habitat on Cady Mountain.   By cutting down immature Douglas Firs and cutting the limbs on mature firs to allow enough light to penetrate the forest floor, the volunteers were able to give young oaks a chance to take root.

The work party of 14 spent the day trimming and hauling the limbs to selected burn pile sites.  In the adjacent meadow, they also worked pulling invasive weeds and grasses from the bases of oak seedlings and repairing their protective wire cages and permeable matting.  For their efforts, volunteers were rewarded with surprise gift bags of house-made cookies from Harrison House Suites and Tucker House Inn, a $20 gift certificate from Coho restaurant, and Cady Mountain’s stunning south-side island views.   Following the tradition of naming significant trees, McCutchen christened one mature oak “Soroptimoak,” in honor of the dedicated Soroptimist crew.

Garry Oaks once thrived across the island, but decades of converting land to agricultural, residential and industrial development has fragmented the habitats, creating the need for ongoing work to restore and expand the ecosystem of these once-prolific trees.  Garry Oak ecosystems support 75 to 80 species of animals and birds who are threatened by a dwindling habitat.  If anyone would like to participate in a work party, contact Doug McCutchen at 378-4402.

Let’s see what folks are up to around here:

“The Clean Room” finishes up its run at the 4-H Building at the Fairgrounds this weekend…don’t miss it!

Health updates:

Debbie Sandwith reports that baby Sonia (the one we had that fundraiser for last month) had a successful heart transplant yesterday. Sounds like all the tests & bloodwork today point to a good result – wahoo!

Meanwhile, Brenna at Islanders Banks says a medical fund account has been opened for Donna Wayner at Islanders Bank. For more information on Donna, please contact Diana Olshefsky at 378-5957.  Any donations can be made at any Islanders Bank.

Heard that naturopathic doctor Leyardia Black suffered a stroke earlier this week…hope to find out soon how she’s doing….

Meanwhile, Jess Oldwyn is “home” at her friend Laura’s house in Seattle & resting, and says she’s sure glad to be alive after her operation to remove that tumor from her head. Way to go, Jess!

The fungus amung us: Had you heard about this? Seems like it’s spreading in our area, and has epidemiologists interested…here’s more.

• Wow – ace photographer Mark Gardner‘s been busy. First of all, he has a Mother’s & Father’s Day special – here’s the deal.

Besides that, he’s launched a self-service stock image site for the San Juan Islands called www.imagesofthesanjuans.com.  Files for both web and print applications can be instantly downloaded from the site, saving anyone needing images of the islands lots of time and effort.  There are currently over 400 images on the site, with lots more to be added, and new images will be added monthly.  Check it out.

And that’s not all – at the recent Professional Photographers of Washington conference he was awarded an Associate Fellow of Photography, which one attains by service to the organization, advancing one’s professional skills through training and having prints selected for the annual print salon. At this year’s conference, all four of his entries were chosen to hang.  These included portraits of locals: Dylan Korth and his red truck, Darcy Ayers, and Juan and Carrie Unpingco, and a portrait of Katie Parsons whose parents have a summer home here.

Way cool!

Sports updates: The Friday Harbor High boys soccer team ended their season last night at Nooksack with a 5-0 loss in their first playoff game.

Meanwhile, Sandi Guard says the lacrosse team plays this weekend: “Lacrosse will be played at 7:30 in the evening Saturday on the football field. We are having a barbecue with donations accepted for playoff costs. We would love to see lots of people out there!

And lastly, on Monday there’s the track meet – here’s the scoop from Kenny & Susan: “Just want to let you know about the middle school’s last track meet. It is a home meet with Lopez and the 6, 7, 8th grades will be competing. This is the largest number of kids to come out for MS track in years.

“The 8th grade boys team set a new school record for the 4×100 relay. Coach Darrin Scheffer inspires the kids to try new events each meet so they can really get a full understanding of what track and field is all about. The kids have a blast cheering each other on and working on their personal best in their individual events. This is the only school sport for middle school so lets get out and cheer on our future Wolverine athletes. Hope to see many folks there on Monday!” Susan Williamson and Kenny Christison

The Whale Museum has a great dinner ahead – here’s more from director Jenny Atkinson:

4th Annual Celebration of the Orca Greeting Ceremony

The Whale Museum’s upcoming 4th Annual “Celebration of the Orca Greeting Ceremony” fundraising dinner and auction will be held on the evening of Saturday, May 22nd at the Mullis Center in Friday Harbor. Just as the Orca whales come together in what are called “greeting ceremonies,” so, too, The Whale Museum wants supporters of these awesome whales to come together for this fun evening.

The evening will begin with happy hour & silent auction at 6:00 p.m.; the no-host bar is tended by Clark Gilbert.   An audio-visual program will be shared by Val Veirs of an actual Orca Greeting Ceremony. Val will play acoustic recordings while showing photos and video of this amazing event.  Watch orcas “line up” to greet one another while listening to an underwater recording of their “conversations.”

Market Chef is preparing dinner. Bakery San Juan is baking the bread. San Juan Roasters is brewing the coffee.  Wine is provided by Northwest Totem Cellars. After dinner, the live portion of the evening will get started with the live auction followed by a dessert auction. That’s right, dessert after dinner is available in this unique auction. Bid on “Awesome Pecan Pie,” “Black & White” cake, a 3-layer “Maple ‘Pan’ Cake,” and other delectable treats.  The wild twist is back for this year’s auction – 65 tickets will be sold for $25 a piece for the big raffle. The winner of the raffle “wins” the right to select any item up for auction (silent, live or dessert). Closing out the evening will be the live auction with more exciting items to bid on.  Special thanks to three businesses for sponsoring the event: Islanders Insurance, Islanders Bank, and Petro San Juan.

Tickets (includes dinner; wine sold separately) are a great deal at $25.00 per person for members of The Whale Museum or $35.00 per person for non-members and can be purchased at The Whale Museum (*basic annual membership investment is $25).  To reserve your tickets, stop by the Museum or call (360) 378-4710 ext. 30.  (If a group would like to attend, tables in increments of six or seven ticket holders can be reserved.)  There are a limited number of tickets available which are selling quickly.  Proceeds raised through this event will directly support the education and research programs of The Whale Museum (www.whalemuseum.org).

A bit of verse for you…from Rumi

Posted May 7, 2010 at 12:04 am by

Morning run....

Morning run....

How did you get away?
You were the pet falcon of an old woman.
Did you hear the falcon-drum?
You were a drunken songbird put in with owls.
Did you smell the odor of a garden?
You got tired of sour fermenting
and left the tavern.

You went like an arrow to the target
from the bow of time and place.
The man who stays at the cemetery pointed the way,
but you didn’t go.
You became light and gave up wanting to be famous.
You don’t worry about what you’re going to eat,
so why buy an engraved belt?

I’ve heard of living at the center, but what about
leaving the center of the center?
Flying toward thankfulness, you become
the rare bird with one wing made of fear,
and one of hope. In autumn,
a rose crawling along the ground in the cold wind.
Rain on the roof runs down and out by the spout
as fast as it can.

Talking is pain. Lie down and rest,
now that you’ve found a friend to be with.

Friends come together…

Easter sunrise service in Costa Rica...

Shannon & Bill Bailey got back three weeks ago from a trip to Costa Rica, where they ran into some old friends – here’s the report from Shannon:

Dear Ian,

Bill and I just got back last week from two weeks in Costa Rica visiting family and friends, including John and Lyn Bradley, two former San Juan Islanders.

John was a wetlands biologist on the island and he and Lyn have long time family roots on San Juan Island.

John & Lyn in Costa Rica

They retired in Costa Rica several years ago and love it. They started a local Christian church in Nuevo Arenal for the locals in Spanish and for expats in English and worked together with others to build a church building to meet in.

Lyn designed it and the annex they are currently building. The service in the picture is their annual Easter sunrise service on the shores of Lake Arenal for the expats. The local Spanish congregation now has its own pastor. Bill and I own property next door to Lyn and John in the countryside and stayed with them. While exploring the local surroundings we got to watch some local farmers crush sugar cane to make some fermented juice. Once they knew we weren’t going to bust them they had us join in and learn about the process.

Friday Harbor Marine Labs Open House: May 8th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The public is enthusiastically invited to participate in the 2010 FHL Open House. This event offers a splendid opportunity to meet scientists and students at the Labs and check out the research and teaching facilities. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Labs will be open for self-guided tours. Scientists and students will showcase their marine science research, answer questions and provide demonstrations. There will be posters, marine plants and animals, microscopes, plankton sampling and observations, and activities for visitors of all ages. Kids are particularly encouraged to attend.

The public is invited to learn more about the equipment used by scientists in marine zoology, botany, fisheries and oceanography.

People can step aboard and tour our 58’ research vessel, the R/V Centennial, and check out its remotely operated vehicle (ROV), oceanographic tools, and high-tech sonar systems. There will be several lectures given by FHL scientists. There will also be a demonstration of SCUBA equipment and a SCUBA dive from the FHL dock. Sturdy shoes are recommended
because the tour route includes rough dock planks, gravel paths and trails. You can find free popcorn in the tradition of Friday Harbor Laboratories’ Open Houses, and light refreshments available in the Dining Hall for a small fee.
