The Bird Count!

Couners in the snowy 2008 Count....

Counters in the snowy 2008 Count....

Barb Jensen wanted you to know the Count is coming up – the first one was in 1900, so let’s keep the tradition alive…here’s more:

Christmas Bird Count – 110 Years of Audubon Counts
Saturday, December 19th!

When we start to see swans it’s time to think Christmas Bird Count! Set this date aside – Saturday, December 19th for the Christmas Bird Count with San Juan Islands Audubon Society. Besides walking around in the snow and climbing over downed trees after a big wind storm you may be the first one to record Western Bluebirds for the count! You don’t necessarily have to go out with a group – you could count birds on your road with your neighbors or by yourself or with your family in you own yard or on your property. So spend part or all of the day with great people counting birds. You don’t have to be an expert but you do have to have enthusiasm for nature.

Even if you don’t count please let us know if you see any of these species the week of the count or let us know ahead of time so we can look for them: small hawks, mourning doves, owls, hummingbirds, sapsuckers, shrikes, jays, and western bluebirds. If you live on the shoreline we need your help with shorebirds and marine birds.

Many routes need better coverage so call today to see what we have for you. For more information and to join call: Barbara Jensen, 378-3068.

Let there be light & love within your thanks….

Eat, drink, be merry...and find a way to share.

Eat, drink, be merry...and find a way to share.

I wish you an open heart on this day of thanks, and open hands. I hope you are with island friends and longtime family, and I hope you get way more than twelve hugs today (since twelve a day is what ya need to be emotionally healthy).

Give thanks. Let tears fill your eyes & heart with what is around us & in us – there is much to be grateful for.

And I wish for you open eyes – that you may see & remember & hold close those who have less, and far less. I hope for you that today’s gratitude pours over to them as well, as you remember them.

“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ ”

Happy Thanksgiving….and remember – we’re all in this together.

Love ya,
Ian

Drop by the Community Dinner!

Over 300 folks dropped by the Community Dinner at the Grange last year....

Over 300 folks dropped by the Community Dinner at the Grange last year....

Minnie says there’s gonna be a crowd – here’s more:

What are you doing on Thanksgiving Day this year?

If you’re looking for a special way to celebrate and give thanks, go to the Grange for a good old-fashioned community Thanksgiving dinner.  You can show up any time between noon and 4:00pm to enjoy a turkey feast.

“This is the eleventh year for the Community Thanksgiving celebration and we never know who or how many will show up”, says Minnie Knych, “but that just makes the day more interesting.  Last year we served dinner to almost 300 people. Sometimes there are a dozen people in the kitchen peeling potatoes, washing pots, stirring gravy or slicing turkey.  There’s always another chore that needs to be done so there’s plenty for everyone who enjoys that part of the day, too.  It’s always good fun and reminds me of my big family childhood holidays when uncles, aunts and cousins gathered in one home for this special day.”

Come alone or bring friends and family.  This is a day to share and give thanks together. Everyone is welcome.  It’s all free.  The food is great.  There’s a fire in the fire place.  Football games are on the TV with cable provided by Windjammer Cable.  There are card games and board games to play while you digest your feast.  Most important of all, there is plenty of turkey, dressing and all the fixin’s and there are plenty of friends and neighbors to share a special day.  For information about how you can join the fun, call Minnie Knych at 378-4662 or email [email protected].

See you at the Grange on Thanksgiving Day!

That was the break in the clouds to start the day this morning, looking east towards Lopez Island from Jackson's Beach....Robert Frost says, "Nothing gold can stay...."

Little notes here & there, the day before Thanksgiving:

• Some days ya just gotta start the day with a poem, from Robert Frost:

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

• Pies: Wendy & the Girls Scouts can give you a helping hand getting ready for tomorrow:

Young island bakers and their parents are geared up and ready to continue a local tradition: saving islanders the time of preparing Thanksgiving desserts and proving pies to the Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

Rowan is headed for Madagascar

Rowan is headed for Madagascar

Local Brownies and Jr. Girl Scouts will be selling homemade pumpkins and pecans pies inside Marketplace on Wednesday. November 25th from 9 am to 3pm. Folks may also choose to donate their pie(s) to the Community Thanksgiving Dinner and the girls will deliver them. For more information, contact Wendy Wood at 370-5462.

• She graduated from Spring Street five years ago, and is headed for great things – here’s more from Erin Braybrook about what Rowan is up to: “Rowan has received an invitation from the Peace Corps to work in agri-forestry on the island of Madagascar! She will leave for training March 1 and will set up a blog at some point. I’ll let you know!”

Six is the magic number: Debbie at the Roche Harbor Market gave me an update on the two derbies she looks after: the December (2009) Hook ‘em & Hold’em Derby has only 6 tickets left! February’s Salmon Classic Derby has 6 boat spots left, too! Call her at 360-378-5562 for more info, or go to http://www.rocheharbor.com/.

• Open for Thanksgiving! Here’s a list of local places you can go eat this Thursday:

It’s free: The San Juan Community Dinner at the Grange from 12 noon – 4pm

The Bluff, Friday Harbor House (Wendy says, “We are open from 3pm – 8pm, with a Six Course Meal for $60.00 per person and $25.00 per person for Wine pairings. We currently have a few open reservation times. Please Call 360-378-8455. Also our Fall Restaurant Hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 11:00am – 9:00pm.)
The Doctor’s Office
Lime Kiln Cafe’ (Roche Harbor)
Coho Restaurant
Front Street Ale House

Haley’s
Downriggers
(Debbie says, “We will be open on Thanksgiving day from noon to 8Pm.  We will be serving our regular menu as well as traditional Thanksgiving dinner, prime rib and lobster.”

Last weekend: Remember what I told you about the Island Stage Left production of Rabbit Hole? This is your last chance – bring your Thanksgiving guests and treat yourselves to a dynamite performance of this Pulitzer prize-winning play. It’s at Roche Harbor Pavilion this Friday, Saturday and Sunday –  Nov 27 at 7:30, 28th at 7:30 and 29th at 4:00.

FHMS' Ann Spratt is retiring this month....

Since she came to the island in 2005 to take over as principal at Friday Harbor Middle School (when 14 year veteran principal Court Bell retired), Ann Spratt has proven to be the steady hand on the wheel that a district undergoing change needs. Her much-needed mix of humor, experience, and administrative moxie helped oversee the move of the sixth graders to the elementary school as well as keep a good thing going at FHMS in spite of deep (and if you ask me, rotten) budget cuts.

Gonna miss having her around – here’s more about what’s planned from Maude at the School District:

Just a note to highlight the fact that tonight’s School Board meeting will begin (at 5:30) with a Special Session to formally acknowledge Ann Spratt’s retirement.  We will have treats and coffee and will make a special presentation. All are welcome to join us!  Ann has been an important part of our school family for the last 5 years and we will truly miss her.

We will also be “Swearing in” Deborah Nolan and Brent Snow as new board members.  They each bring special talents and viewpoints that will help guide us through the next four years. Welcome Deb and Brent!

The San Juan Update enters its thirteenth year today...

The San Juan Update enters its thirteenth year today...

Well, it’s been twelve years ago today that the San Juan Update got underway in 1997, and as with most pre-teens, it’s kinda fun to look back on when things were young & innocent & cute. As my little birthday present to you, I thought I’d offer you a look at the whole thing since I began it.

Here’s the whole enchilada…from 1997 till this past March, the site was a hand-coded, homespun entity; then I decided to go a little higher tech, mostly so I could write more & code less, along with the design you now see.

So, if you’d like to see what I’ve posted in the past seven months, just find the “Archives” button above & search away, or go to the buttons above to start with the latest news & go backwards. The rest of the Update – 11 and a 1/2 years of it – is below.

The most fun job on the island...wahoo!

The most fun job on the island...wahoo!

I’d like to take just a moment to thank you for reading & commenting & sending me ideas, and I’d have to say thank you for sending me your love & support. I love this story we live in, and I’m glad for the chance to share it.

Hope you enjoy the blast through the past…and are ready for the next round. Here we go.

Love ya,
Ian

I really like how Mark Gardner’s portrait work turns out! Check out more of his work at Rainshadow Photographics.

People around the island….

It was Dilys Goodman's birthday this weekend - she and Carol Jackson celebrate with their brand new San Juan Update calendar for 2010 (come by & get one - I have one for you, too!)

If it's a bookstore, it must be Serendipity - it was Dilys Goodman's birthday this weekend - she and Carol Jackson celebrate with their brand new San Juan Update calendar for 2010 (come by & get one - I have one for you, too!)

What have folks been up to? Let’s check around the island:

Allison and Kate

Allison and Kate

• Homecoming: Sure was nice to run into Kate Longley with her mom Allison last night at the store…she’s working at a library in San Diego these days, and playing club soccer. Kate was a part of the first FHHS girls’ soccer team back in 1995, when she played as a steady defender for the Wolverines before going to Evergreen State. Good to see her!

•Birthday weekend: Both Mark & Mica at Friday Harbor Espresso (the little yellow place on the corner of Spring & Mullis that used to be Uptown) went to Seattle this weekend to celebrate both their birthdays, and to see Taj Mahal…they happened to stay at the Sheridan with Beckham & the USA’s Landon Donovan, too, who were in town for the MLS Cup.

• Speaking of tough gigs, Darren & Lisa of San Juan Islands TV are shooting (sailing/working, too) in the British Virgin Islands for their Latitudes & Attitudes TV show since the 12th – they’ll be back in time for Thanksgiving, though…

Things are looking up for the swim teams....

Things are looking up for the swim teams....that's Iskandar & Lilis' girl Yasmin on Saturday.

The intramural swim meet was a blast – here’s more from Sam at San Juan Fitness:

The San Juan Island Fitness Swim Team had their first intramural swim meet on Saturday, November 21 at the San Juan Island Fitness pool.  Events consisted of 25 yard freestyle for the younger group to a 200 yard freestyle relay and most everything in between.  The meet comes three weeks after practice began and was designed to give the kids a experience the excitement of competition.

“The meet went really well” according to Jen Durgin, head coach of the Orcas.  “We need to work on our turns, touches and endurance but some of the kids really surprised me (in a good way)” she added.  The two teams are the Dolphins, for newer swimmers and the Orcas, for those who have been in the pool a bit longer.  Both teams are comprised of kids from 7 to 16 and open to the community regardless of club membership.

Next up for the team is a trip to Anacortes on December 5 for a dive clinic and again on December 12 for their first off-island meet with Mt. Vernon YMCA.

Lighting up the night...

Lighting up the night...

• Keeping the street brightly lit – that’s Aaron at the Palace Theatre replacing a couple of bulbs in front of the movie house. I had never noticed how many lights there are in that stretch – check it out! And … Aaron says the Sandy Bullock movie “The Blind Side” and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” will be here next week as well as this week.

• Yvonne from the Post Office says they have a new interim postmaster to replace Dan, whose last day was Friday as he left for Oak Harbor – the new guy is Randy.

Meanwhile she says the results seem to indicate that our little post office (the little post office that could) has sold the most breast cancer stamps of any district in Idaho & Washington. That means we bought ’em (yay for us!) ’cause they sold the most (yay for them!) which is one more step towards research that will nail down a cure (double yay for THAT!)

And…holding onto the crown will be tough – Yvonne says that Dan promises Oak Harbor will give us a run for it next year.

Sure was good to see how much little Kayla has grown, as proud papa Jamen took her for a walk last week....
