Gospel Jazz this weekend & next – it's gonna rock (or whatever it is jazz does)

Jazz Gospel at St. David's

Jazz Gospel at St. David's

Ran into Kathleen Wilson at the grocery store & she said, “It’s gonna be great.” Saw Archie Brooks & he told me, “You won’t believe it.” Checked in with Roberta Leed & she says, “It’s amazing, and it will amaze you.”

Stuff like that gets my attention, so Sunday I called Richard Barker & asked him what the deal was.

He says this Sunday at St. David’s Episcopal Church at 4pm & next Sunday (the 20th), he & some friends are taking traditional gospel tunes & hymns and doing them with jazz chording & influences. He described it as “giving them a facelift.” He’s jazzed up Amazing Grace, and set How Great Thou Art to a bossa nova… you get the idea.

The lead singers in this effort are Kathleen Wilson & Kate Schuman, and they’ll be supported by Mary Barker, Roberta Leed, and Judy Holme. The seven piece band is made up of Tom Starr (trumpet), Carrie Brooks (keyboard), Jonathan Piff (guitar), Denny Holme (drums), Richard Barker (sax & flute), Jim Vedder (bass), Rob Simpson/Robin Lohrey (trading off on keyboard/organ).

The shows benefit the St. David’s Building Fund, with admission by donation (they’re suggesting $10/person or $20 for parents & kids, but no one is turned away.)

Bonnie Gilmore and former board member Bill Henikman at the 2008 Island Rec Children's Festival

Just spoke to Bonnie today & found out that she’s leaving the County United Way at the end of the year. I rejected her resignation request but her board OK’d it anyway, so she’ll be finishing up this last quarter & then moving to Anacortes with Chuck…here’s more:

Bonnie Gilmore

Bonnie Gilmore

United Way of San Juan County Executive Director Bonnie Gilmore has announced her resignation effective January, 2010.  Gilmore joined United Way in July, 2005 and has seen the organization grow steadily each year, ensuring that more that more than thirty local human services programs continue to receive funding.

“I am grateful to the residents of our community for responding to the need as they have stepped up to look out for both their neighbors and the people they pass on the street” she said.  In the past four years, United Way has granted nearly a half million dollars to agencies within San Juan county, and will continue to look for ways to partner with other organizations to address many of the challenges facing local families.

Gilmore is relocating to Anacortes with her husband, Chuck Rust.  A search committee has been convened to recruit her replacement.  For information on the position, please contact United Way at 378-4121.

Climate change: What does the future hold for our marine ecosystem?

Nathan Mantua comes to the island....

Nathan Mantua comes to the island....

My good friend Rachel from the Marine Labs sent me this bit about a lecture on Monday with Nathan Mantua that you won’t want to miss:

Past and Future Climate Change Impacts on Northwest Marine Ecosystems

Is climate really that important for our coastal marine ecosystems?  In this presentation, I will review historical records that document widespread climate-driven changes in our region’s marine ecosystems, from year-long El Nino events to decades long shifts in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. I will also discuss climate links to recent observations of hypoxic and anoxic waters in lower Hood Canal and in the nearshore waters along the Oregon Coast, and summarize key issues surrounding the growing ecosystem threats from ocean acidification. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of future climate change, and how regional changes in ocean temperatures, acidity, winds and currents are likely to influence our marine ecosystems in the near and distant future.

Nathan Mantua is a Research Associate Professor in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, adjunct faculty in Atmospheric Sciences and Marine Affairs, the Co- Director of the Center for Science in the Earth System at the University of Washington, and a research scientist with the PNW Station of the US Forest Service. He has been a member of the UW’s Climate Impacts Group since 1995. His research focuses on climate impacts on the water cycle, forests and aquatic ecosystems, and how climate information is or isn’t being used in resource management decisions.

He received a B S from the University of California at Davis in 1988, and a Ph D from the UW’s Department of Atmospheric Science in 1994. He spent one year as a postdoctoral Fellow at Scripps Institute of Oceanography working on a pilot project for the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction, and has worked at the University of Washington since 1995. In April 2000 he received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for his climate impacts research and public outreach activities.

Just today: Happy 9/9/09!

When I played soccer, back in the day, my number was #9.

Diggin’ it.

And you too – find your own good reason.

Hate to waste a perfectly good numerically interesting day, don’t ya think?

(Besides being Nancy Hanson’s birthday – she had one on 9/9/99, too – the San Juan Update for 9/9/99 also mentions the great Orcas dock munch – when the Elwha’s nav computer went silent & the boat took out the wingwall at the ferry landing there. In those original reports we reported the repairs would take a week, but that island had no ferry service for another six weeks. Remember that? It’s near the bottom of this page under “Elwha takes out Orcas dock”….)

Brightening the grey days….

Saw Pat watering these flowers out front of Island Studios this weekend…a nice counterpoint to grey days.

Pick the right one…

Posted September 9, 2009 at 12:01 am by

The choice is yours....

The choice is yours....

A friend of mine has not one but two job offers (you know who you are….)

She asked me which one she should take – the one she hated, but the money was good, or the one that made her heart sing, but would leave her dirt-poor for the next 8o years.

I tend towards the second, because that’s the way ya keep life simple, but that doesn’t work for everyone, in this lifetime. So it comes down to to picking the one that won’t bug ya, much.

The president's speech for the kids….

Posted September 8, 2009 at 12:35 pm by

Reckon I don’t pay enough attention – lotta people said the president’s speech for the kids around the country was awful enough that  school districts should cover their eyes & not let ’em see it.

I checked the speech out for you (that’s what I do) and decided to take a chance & go ahead & make it available to you to decide for yourself.

Luna...

Luna...

“Saving Luna” will be here on Thursday evening, and what you may not know is that the filmmakers live just across the way in Sidney, B.C.

Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit are writers and documentary filmmakers who specialize in telling stories of the relationships between people and our natural world.

In 2004, they came to Gold River, Nootka Sound, to cover the story of Luna for Smithsonian magazine. They planned to stay for three weeks. They stayed for three years. They are now writing a book and have produced “Saving Luna,” a feature documentary about Luna.

Providing the score for the film, David Parfit began working for Mountainside Films in 2006. He is a composer, sound recordist and sound designer

Here’s more about the filmmakers, and the here’s more about the showing of the film here. It’s a benefit for Soundwatch, by the way – which is  a super reason to get yourself to the Community Theatre on Thursday.

See ya there!
