Teddy Deane does Anacortes, kinda...

I’m guessing that when you saw the poster to the right in Anacortes, you were thinking the guy in the picture sure looks familiar…well, yeah, that’s the island’s own Teddy Deane, who definitely looks like a jazz guy. Irony is, he’s not scheduled to play in this year’s Festival.

That won’t slow up Teddy though – he’s a great session player, and has a couple of leads for bands he can sit in with, so he’ll probably hustle his way on stage some way or another (or, more likely, get recruited to play,’cause he’s that good.)

Although he won’t be playing this week at the AleHouse, he continues his Wednesday night 6-9pm shows the rest of the month.

Free advice…. Island Dating 101

Gotta go with what works.

Gotta go with what works.

I hear people around the island say it all the time – you just can’t MEET anybody here. I know this can be a problem, since I’ve carefully watched what seems to work (nothing) and what doesn’t work (everything else.)

The real key is to keep trying, and look for the patterns that make a difference – so I’ve posted the handy pie chart above to help out.

Some people, however are in a bigger rush than all that, so as a community service, here’s a place you can go (click here):

This is where you can shop, when you're tired of all that boring online dating....

Fast food in the great Northwest….

Moose through the drive through....

Moose through the drive through in Homer, Alaska....

One of the things we sometimes pride ourselves on here on the island is that we don’t have any fast food places (although the Rocky Bay Cafe will get you breakfast pretty doggone quickly, if you’re catching the next ferry). I pretty much hope it stays that way, although other places farther north haven’t been able to keep ’em away.

Oatmeal at the Naked Bean – it's the way to go….

You can get it with almost anything, and everything. Mine had fruit (fresh) and nuts (whacked up) and crunchy brown sugar.

When I went went by the Naked Bean on Saturday, naturally I asked Billy, “Wha’s happening?” Naturally, he told me, so I got a bowl of oatmeal & it was awesome, as you can tell in the pictures. While I was there, I also checked out the new couch (it was all right, the way a good couch is).

Robin shows off the new breakfast item at the Bean.

Here’s more about the oatmeal:

To all of our Bean Buddies who are able to come by the cafe, we have a special treat for you starting today. Slow-cooked, Steel-Cut Oatmeal is now being offered on a daily basis at TNB! Forget that oatmeal-in-a-packet stuff, this is the real deal and you can mix and match your toppings!

Skagit Valley Mixed Berries, TNB Signature Brown Sugar Crunch, Bananas, Gourmet Nut Melange…these and other toppings are available for you to choose from!

Come and join the others who have tasted the oatmeal and have uttered only one small word after the first bite…”wow”

New owners at Warehouse Coffee - Clint Mills (right) and a silent business partner (left).

Since the early 2000s Dwight Ware & his family have been the backbone of Warehouse Coffee on Tucker Street. Now he’s sold the business to Clint Mills & a silent partner, and Clint tells me they’re pretty excited to be there. He’s hoping to amp up the offerings for the lunch break at FHHS, and hopes to continue the quality of service & coffee he inherited from Dwight’s family.

Drop by & tell them hey!

Just read in Chamber of Commerce news that in July, the San Juan Island Library loaned over 15,000 items. That’s a lot of loans, and it’s a record for the San Juan Island Library!

Way to go, you guys!

"Saving Luna" – the movie….

Posted September 4, 2009 at 12:08 am by

Luna....

Jenny from the Whale Museum sent me this so you & I can get it on our calendars…here’s the scoop:

The Whale Museum will present the Friday Harbor premiere of “Saving Luna,” the world-acclaimed documentary covering the life of Luna, a young lone orca who made a home in Nootka Sound, eagerly seeking the company of humans and redefining the nature of friendship and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.  The award-winning documentary by Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit covers the three-year story with breathtaking cinematography, focusing on the web of life and our interconnectedness with this compelling biography of a young whale reaching beyond his world to ours.

The Friday Harbor Premiere event will be held at the San Juan Community Theatre as a fundraiser for The Whale Museum’s Soundwatch Boater Education program.  A ‘Meet the Producers’ reception kicks off the evening at 6:00 pm.  The reception will also feature hors d’oeuvres created by Chef Madden Surbaugh of Steps Wine Bar & Cafe.

The film will begin at 7:00 pm on Sept 10th followed by a conversation with the producers and individuals who participated in the Luna Stewardship Program.  Ticket prices are $45 for the reception and film or $20 for the film only.

A Tourist in Disguise IV ( the last installment)

Posted September 4, 2009 at 12:01 am by

San Juan Preservation Trust’s photography intern Jane Fox wraps up her series of essays about living here this past summer. Here’s round four (did you see Part One & Part Two, as well as Part Four):

A Tourist in Disguise IV.

Of course, the funny part was that it had taken me two days to notice it. And when I finally did (somewhere between Friday Harbour and San Juan Valley), I nearly drove off the road. After all, it’s not every day that a two-foot long zucchini turns up on your passenger seat. I pulled over and had a closer look. Yes. It was exactly what I had thought it was. I hadn’t imagined it, a giant Continue Reading
