Darcie, back in town….

Former FHHS counselor Emily Reed keeps tabs on her students, even the hard-to-catch ones like Darcie....

Former County Commissioner Darcie Nielsen was walking the streets of Friday Harbor last week, and Robin Jacobson caught up with her for a moment to file this report:

Hi Ian,
Darcie Nielsen was here from Europe for a quick visit about a week ago and I took the attached photo of her then with Emily Reed (who, as Darcie’s high school counselor, positively predicted she would go places someday). Darcie can normally be found in Tirana, Albania where she is the head of the Governance in Economy and Environmental Issues Department within the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (www.osce.org). Some people will remember when she was stationed in Turkey with another international organization.

And yes, she still has diplomatic privileges and floats between countries faster than we can get past a security scanner at SeaTac.

Get her out of prison….

My music buddy Dave Calhoun dropped me a note ’cause he’s playing in town this weekend AND he made the movie above about releasing an L pod killer whale from a prison called the Miami Seaquarium (here’s more about THAT)…the scoop at a glance:

Dave at Roche Harbor, singin'....

Hi Ian! Just a quick note to let you know that I’ll be playing at Roche Harbor Friday, Saturday and Sunday this weekend from 3-6pm each day. I’ll also be doing double duty on Saturday playing at Haley’s from 9pm-midnight. Hope to see you out and about at one of those shows! I also have made a movie about Lolita, the killer whale being held prisoner at the Miami Seaquarium.

As you probably know, she was captured from L pod almost 40 years ago. I’ve used a song from my new CD “She’s Finally Free” as the backdrop and you can view it on my website.

Hey Ian,
This is a big one! I have a list of names and awards that were won by all our San Juan County 4-H exhibitors. We are so lucky to have such a great community of supporters. This is such a wonderful way to acknowledge all the hard work and time our 4-H volunteers and youth put into their year long projects.

Thanks very much,

A Tourist in Disguise III ( the third installment)

Posted September 2, 2009 at 6:23 pm by

Every so often, I like to share good writing from around the island…here’s a series of essays from San Juan Preservation Trust’s photography intern Jane Fox, who has lived in the islands this summer. Here’s round three (did you see Part One & Part Two?):

A Tourist in Disguise III

America is unapologetically dependant on the car. This has its logic. With a quantity of distance that is unfathomable to the British, one has to ask, how else is a person supposed to get around? I am not sure what I had thought I was going to do without a car.

Well, that’s not quite true. I believe the full extent of my thought process was, ‘it’s an Island; I’ll get a bike. Or a llama’. My thoughts on transport ended there. Continue Reading

New head honcho at SVC….

Randy with favorite girls Ava & Lucy

Randy with favorite girls Ava & Lucy

He used to run summer soccer camps & events before he an Missy moved to the island. Now he’s moved up to the top spot for Skagit Valley College on the island, replacing departed director Denise King.

Islanders first got to know Randy Martin as the FHHS girls soccer coach in 2000, and during that time he also got going with the Elderhostel program at SVC…and going. Under his leadership, the local Elderhostel program has grown to be the second biggest in the state (and if you ask me, the coolest.) Now he’s in charge of that AND the college…good move by Mick Donahue, who oversees the operation here.

And he’s not the only one starting something new – Lucy starts kindergarten this week, by the way.

How drama works…

Posted September 2, 2009 at 1:28 am by

Hey, I was gonna tell you about my favorite blogger, Derek Sivers, and tell ya you oughta sign up for his e-mail updates. But I decided to go one better, and show you a bit of his writing, and let you decide for yourself, and THEN go sign up for his e-mail list. Here’s the story from yesterday:

Kurt Vonnegut explains drama (2009-09-01)
© 2009 Derek Sivers

I was at a Kurt Vonnegut talk in New York a few years ago. Talking about writing, life, and everything.

He explained why people have such a need for drama in their life.

He said, “People have been hearing fantastic stories since time began. The problem is, they think life is supposed to be like the stories. Let’s look at a few examples.”

He drew an empty grid on the board, like this:

Time moves from left to right. Happiness from bottom to top.

Time moves from left to right. Happiness from bottom to top.

He said, “Let’s look at a very common story arc. The story of Cinderella.”

Cinderella story.

Cinderella story.

It starts with her awful life with evil stepsisters, scrubbing the fireplace. Then she get an invitation to the ball! Things look up. Then the fairy godmother makes her a dress and a coach. Even better! Then she goes to the ball, and dances with the prince! This is great! But then it’s midnight. She has to go. Oh no. Sadness. Back to her humdrum life scrubbing the fireplace. But it’s not as bad as before, because she’s had this encouraging experience. Then, the prince finds her, and the happiness factor is off the chart! Happily ever after.

“People LOVE that story! This story arc has been written a thousand times in a thousand tales. And because of it, people think their lives are supposed to be like this.”

He wiped the board clean and said, “Now let’s look at another popular story arc: the disaster.”

Disaster story.

Disaster story.

It’s an ordinary day in an ordinary town. But something horrible happens! A child falls down a well! The whole town gathers to save her. Old grudges surface, but are belittled in the light of this tragedy. Rifts are bonded as people work together. The child is saved, and all is well. But notice it’s a little better than it was before, now that this incident has brought them all closer together.

“People LOVE that story! This story arc has been written a thousand times in a thousand tales. And because of it, people think their lives are supposed to be like this.”

But the problem is, life is really like this…

Real life.

Real life.

Our lives drifts along with normal things happening. Some ups, some downs, but nothing to go down in history about. Nothing so fantastic or terrible that it’ll be told for a thousand years.

“But because we grew up surrounded by big dramatic story arcs in books and movies, we think are lives are supposed to be filled with huge ups and downs! So people pretend there is drama where there is none.”

That’s why people invent fights. That’s why we’re drawn to sports. That’s why we act like everything that happens to us is such a big deal.

We’re trying to make our life into a fairy tale.
