FHHS '09 grad Austin Scheffer in the Dominican Republic last week....

Vic Woodward writes that the mission trip he & his team took to the Dominican Republic went well & they’re ready to tell folks about it – here’s more:

Hi Everyone!

We are working on getting pictures together for some gatherings to share our mission trip with the community. There are two planned, Tues. night Aug. 18th at Paideia School – 7-8:30 pm and Sun. Aug 23rd at Islands Community Church, 7-8:30 pm. Come see all of us and hear our stories.

If you wouldn’t mind, please place this information in your bulletins, as there were many many people who supported all of us in prayers and giving. We don’t want to miss anyone. Please spread the word.

Thanks so much! We are looking forward to seeing you.

Vic, for the team

Meanwhile, back at the County Fair….

And when you go, dress up.

And when you go, dress up.

It was great going to the Fair yesterday – the music was good (loved the Local Harvest guys last night, and everyone else all day long), and seeing friends & old friends & new friends & everybody.

I really believe ya gotta have twelve hugs a day to be healthy – going to the Fair is a great way to get ahead on your quota.

See ya there. Don’t wait till Saturday….

Have you eaten at the Cannery House lately? Cameron and I went last week on a sunny day – can’t be beat. Drop by & check it out – just across from the Courthouse.

The other night I was out at Roche Harbor just as the clouds rolled in, the colors ceremony was happening, and the sun went down. Beautiful summer evening.

Boyd and Sandy are talking about barns on Friday....

I asked Boyd Pratt when his “Barn talk” was and was happy to see it’s tomorrow – here’s more about what he & Sandy Strelou have going on:

The 100 Friends of Old Island Barns has an exhibit on the Barns of San Juan County at the Agricultural Tent at the San Juan County Fair. On Friday, August 14th at 2:45 p.m., Project Coordinator Sandy Strehlou and Architectural Historian Boyd Pratt will talk on the 100 Friends’ survey of our county’s historic barns.  Chris Moore, Field Director for the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation, will give an introduction to the Washington Heritage Barn Register and talk about a grant program for barn restoration. Wedding photographer Jmaes Krall was busy Saturday at the San Juan Vineyards...

Got a note from Becki Day that last Saturday really was busy (she’s at Vinny’s as well as San Juan Events); and I heard that former islander Anna Gordon’s getting married here this coming weekend:

Hi Ian,

Saw your note on the weddings this last weekend. Vinny’s catered and coordinated 4 fine rehearsal dinner & wedding receptions this last week – the one for the Raichlen’s- 200 people to see that wonderful couple get married.   And Jackie Youde and Dave Francis. Jackie’s family has a home on Gull Cove – 45 of their close family and friends came up for a beautiful rehearsal dinner/wedding and reception, before they went back to Seattle for the big reception at the Edgewater over the weekend. Whew, what a week!!!

Moving on…

Just got this note from IIMC administrative assistant Rebekah Deitz:

Dr. Johnson is moving on...

Dr. Johnson is moving on...

Dr. Allen Johnson will be leaving Interisland Medical center as of September 19, 2009.

He has decided to pursue a new position working in a hospital environment locally. This position will allow him to continue living on the island and will give him more flexibility of time to spend with his family.

He considers it a privilege to have worked with the people of San Juan Island and looks forward to assisting them again in the future.

I know you’re going to the Fair….I believe I haven’t run into anybody in the past couple of weeks who isn’t. It’s what we do. It’s part of belonging to the tribe. It’s a rite of passage, even if you’re already in.

One of the fun things (well, actually, THE fun thing) about hanging around the Fair for the next four days is seeing people… here are portfolios of folks I took over the last few years, with a guest appearance of faces from the 2002 Fair (which has a lot of kids who have now graduated from university – that’s what seven years will do!

There are also photos of folks in Saturday’s 8.8 Loop Run, sponsored by Island Rec, mixed in from previous years…more faces of friends there.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

Gorillas in the mist, that you missed…

Gorilla in the sun...

After I ran that bit about the garden behind Island Studios last week, I was surprised to see a guest in the garden last Thursday, reading Sports Illustrated (I didn’t check to see if it was the swimsuit edition).

Claudia says all kinds of folks were posing with him & offering drinks from the Sweet Retreat (which gorillas don’t drink, ’cause it makes their hair too fluffy.)

Early version of "I'm Yours"….

This may be the most-played song of the year – seems I hear it everywhere, but I’m guessing you’ll have it going the rest of the day in your head if you watch the video…watch out. It’s Jason Mraz with his song “I’m Yours.”
