Monster book sale - at the elementary school - see ya there!

Monster book sale - at the elementary school - see ya there!

It’s this weekend & it’s a great time to stock up on books for the winter – easily one of the most anticipated events around San Juan Island. Here’s more from Dilys & the Friends of the Library:

I hope you can remind everyone that the Friends of the Library 30th ANNUAL BOOK SALE takes place this weekend at the Elementary School, on Grover Street. Friday July 24th 6 – 8 pm (Members only – inexpensive memberships sold at the door) and Saturday July 25th 10 am to 2 pm. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

The annual Book Sale is a popular event.  You can stock up on books at low prices.
All proceeds from the sale benefit the San Juan Island Library, so you are helping your community as well as enlarging your own personal library.

The Friends of the Library welcome help during setting up and closing the sale. If you can spare an hour or two, check out the sign up sheets at the Library. See you at the sale!

Thanks,
Dilys Goodman

Just do your best to keep yourself in balance. One of the first things that causes Energy misalignment, is asking or demanding too much of yourself in terms of time and effort. In other words, you just cannot burn the candle at both ends, so that you are physically tired, and then expect yourself to have a cheerful attitude. So, the rule of thumb has to be: “I’m going to be very, very, very happy, and then do everything I have time to do after that.”

Running with Wolfs… keeping up with Emily & Chris

Chris & Emily...

Chris & Emily...

You know by now that Emily & Chris Wolf are heading for Qater to teach for a couple of years & to settle in with Nolan & Gretta… Chris leaves behind his Town Council job & middle-school teaching gig, while Emily leaves the library as they head out on this great adventure.

They’re gonna keep a blog of the trip (here it is – click here) so we can see what’s happening with our friends in Qater.

Pig Kissin' – kiss for the cure raises $1700

Dan & the pig get acquainted before he plants one on the pig....

Dan & Leanne's pig get acquainted before he plants one on the pig....

It was all in good fun – folks could vote with their dollars, and Postmaster Dan Fleming won the top prize…the chance to kiss a pig. Leanne Grosjacques brought her favorite pig, Dan puckered up, and the deal was done.

Conducted at last night’s Music on the Lawn with Island Rec (wasn’t the music great?), it was all a fundraiser by the Soroptimists to make a buck for the Relay For Life this weekend, and when the votes were counted, $1700 had been raised.

It was announced as Kig Pissin’ early in the evening, but that didn’t fool anyone, especially the pig. 🙂

"As You Like It" continues this week….

It’s one of my favorites of the Shakespeare canon… “As You Like It” features a woman who is in the center of everything & a lovestruck guy who is after true love, on whatever tree he can find it. Here’s the details of the Island Stage Left show, which runs till the end of August on Wold Road and at Roche Harbor (this week’s shows are on Wold.)

You’ll love it.

Also, on Saturday is the group’s “Friendraiser”…here’s more about it. And, just to be clear – the Friendraiser is before the show – the show, as always, is open to everyone.

Lavender Festival last weekend brings 'purple love'…

Fields of purple...

Fields of purple...

When I went to the Lavender Festival last weekend at Pelindaba Lavender Farm, it was a bit transcendent – clear skies, a slight breeze wafting the lavender smell over from the farm, with marimba music playing and food & crafts all around.

The best part for me was hearing a little kid tell his mother, “Mom, it’s like purple love here.”

The Farm has been dealing well with its early season disaster, when a fire whacked the production facility, and the weekend’s success was in no small part because of the gracefulness & smooth handling of the problems presented by the setback. Way to go, Stephen & everyone!

Victoria tells me that Lily is about a year old - wow! You can see her here in the picture when she was born on August 7th last year...

When it’s sunny & bright & the music makes you want to dance, it’s always good to check in with the new moms on the island – the kids always look happy & the moms proud of their little islanders.

One of the coolest parts of the Arts Fair last weekend was Chalk It Up! put on by Island Rec. Over 80 kids painted the sidewalks around the Courthouse, leaving a colorful splash on a sunny day.

Sus Kellogg is one of the leaders on the island with Natural Horsemanship - that's her at last year's County Fair....

My friend Megan dropped me a note about this, this weekend – if you haven’t seen a Natural Horsemanship demonstration, you’ve missed out – it’s a wonderful show of the connection between rider & horse.

Every year I’ve seen it at the Fair, it’s incredible & inspiring – make time for it. Here’s more from Megan:

I was wondering if it would be possible for you to help spread the word about a natural horsemanship demonstration taking place on Saturday July 25th. If it would be possible to put the following (or a version of the following) up on the Event Calendar that would be wonderful:

Natural Horsemanship Demonstration
When: Saturday July 25th
Where: States Inn, 2687 West Valley Road
Time: 10 AM
Admission: Free! Donations welcome

Thanks so much!
